However, one thing automakers don’t build into their cars is protection against rodent infestation.

Your car’s engine bay and other critical areas are welcoming surroundings that give pests like mice and chipmunks shelter and a place to satisfy their needs to chew constantly. This activity is not only an inconvenience and a health hazard, but the gnawing of wires and other essential components can lead to expensive repairs.

Keep reading as we examine why mice and other rodents find cars tempting targets. We’ll also cover how to prevent this activity, respond to unwelcome visitors, and uncover effective deterrents.

Understanding Why Rodents Target Vehicles

Dealing with rodents in cars starts with understanding why these tiny creatures are attracted to automobiles. Keep these factors in mind:

Warmth and Shelter

Like all animals, mice and other rodents instinctively need shelter, especially during colder months. A recently driven car with a warm engine bay can be very attractive on a chilly night, especially if there’s snow on the ground. Even though residual heat may only last an hour or so, that’s enough of an invitation.

Accessible Entry Points

While a locked car may look secure, underneath, it’s anything but. The numerous small openings and crevices are the equivalent of a welcome mat, made more accessible by easy-to-climb rubber tires.

Rodents only need as little as a quarter-inch of space to gain access, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  That means that gaps around cables and wires, drainage holes, ventilation systems, and spaces between body panels are the equivalent of doorways. Open engine compartments are even more inviting.

Chewing Habits

Rodents have a continuous need to chew. This activity is a byproduct of their teeth growing throughout their lives. The constant gnawing keeps this growth in check. Unfortunately, numerous parts are at risk if this occurs while they’re in your car. Electrical wiring, plastic components, hoses, belts, and upholstery are inviting opportunities. This chewing behavior can lead to short circuits, fluid leaks, and other mechanical issues that can be costly to repair and possibly dangerous if not corrected.

Busting a Myth about Soy-Based Wiring

The switch to more environmentally friendly materials like soy-based wire casings was rumored to be why rodents chewed at electric components. However, Terminix dispels this as a myth, saying, “All the chewing lies in rodent biology.”

4 Preventive Measures: Keeping Rodents at Bay

Taking a few preventative steps can reduce the likelihood of rodents making a home in your car.

1. Park Wisely

Where you park matters to make your car less attractive to these four-legged pests:

  • Avoid parking near wooded areas, tall grass, or overgrown vegetation
  • When possible, park in a garage that’s well-sealed against rodent entry versus outdoors
  • If outdoor parking is a must, stay away from accumulated trash or water sources like leaky faucets or water bowls

2. Seal Entry Points

Periodically inspect your car for potential entry points and seal them off:

  • Check for gaps around cables, wires, and other components entering the engine compartment.
  • Inspect weather stripping around doors and windows to ensure a tight seal.
  • Install barriers, like metal mesh or steel wool, to block small openings.

3. Keep It Clean

Rodents have a finely developed sense of smell, reports NewScientist. Not only can they hone in on food-based aromas, but they only need 50 milliseconds to find a pesky food wrapper. That last french fry you didn’t finish can be an open invitation to a hungry mouse. The same can be said for the piece of lettuce that fell between the seats.

Effective rodent deterrence begins with removing any potential food source, no matter how miniscule. Don’t leave food (or the remnants of a meal) in your car. Throw away any food wrappings (which can retain scents) and regularly vacuum the floor and seats to remove crumbs and other minute leftovers.

4. Regular Inspections

Just like you should be checking the oil and tire pressure, get in the habit of regularly checking for signs of rodent activity:

  • Examine the engine bay for droppings, nests, or the remains of chewed materials
  • Look for signs of gnawing on wires, hoses, belts, or plastic components.
  • Inspect the cabin, especially under the seats and in the trunk, for indicators of a rodent presence.
  • Catching rodent infestation early can limit the damage that can be expensive, like replacing sensitive electronics and wiring.

Effective Deterrents: Keeping Rodents Away

Keeping the rodent problem away is far better than dealing with the aftermath. Here are some effective measures that can help.

Natural Deterrents

Several natural substances are known to repel rodents due to their strong scents:

  • Peppermint Oil: Soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them strategically around your car. While this approach can be used under the hood, take care to prevent the cotton balls from contacting any moving parts.
  • Cayenne Pepper: Carefully applied dashes of cayenne pepper can discourage rodents from taking up residence in your car.
  • Dryer Sheets: Place fresh dryer sheets in your car, engine compartment, and trunk, replacing them regularly. Again, exercise caution inside the engine bay.

Light and Motion

Rodents prefer dark, quiet environments. Disrupting these conditions can help deter them:

  • Keep the area around your vehicle well-lit, especially if parking outdoors.
  • Consider using motion-activated lights in your garage or driveway.
  • Moving your car regularly, as the vibration and change in location can discourage nesting or loosen nesting materials that may be in progress.

Electronic Devices

While pest control services and technology have advanced to include electronic rodent repellents, users report mixed results with these methods. That said, if you’re unsuccessful with the other repellent methods, then you may have nothing to lose with these devices:

  • Ultrasonic Machines: These small units emit high-frequency sound waves that are unpleasant to rodents but inaudible to humans. Keep in mind that dogs may be able to hear these sounds.
  • LED Strobe Lights: Some ultrasonic machines also have flashing lights to deter pests.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when using these electronics to deter pests.

Dealing with an Infestation: 4 Steps to Take

If preliminary signs point to a rodent infestation, it’s time to act quickly to minimize the damage and return your car to a cleaner condition by putting these action steps in place.

1. Inspection

Rodent droppings can carry disease, so before fully tackling an infestation, wear protective gear, including gloves and a face mask. Look beyond the initial trouble spot. If you’ve found signs of rodent activity in the engine compartment, thoroughly examine the passenger compartment and the trunk or cargo area. Be sure to look in storage cubbies and hidden compartments. Likewise, rodents in the cabin can also mean they’ve found a home under the hood.

2. Cleaning

Once you’ve identified the affected areas, it’s time to clean (again, wearing protective equipment is essential):

  • Remove any nests or debris carefully, disposing of them in sealed plastic bags. Use a shovel to minimize contact with the remnants.
  • Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or similar air filter to clean up droppings and smaller particles.
  • Disinfect all areas with an appropriate cleaning solution. Test a small area first to ensure the liquid won’t damage surfaces.

3. Repairs

Address any damage caused by the rodents:

  • Inspect and replace any chewed wires or hoses, especially around your car battery.
  • Check fluid levels, as rodents may have caused leaks in various systems.
  • Repair or replace damaged upholstery or insulation.

4. Professional Help

For severe infestations or if you’re uncomfortable handling the situation yourself (particularly if live animals are present or you’re not into mouse traps), consider hiring a professional exterminator:

  • Locate a pest or rodent control specialist with experience in automotive infestations.
  • Have a mechanic inspect your car for hidden damage that may affect performance or safety.

Extended Warranties: Protecting Against Vehicle Damage

How to Recognize and Repair Suspension System Issues https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/recognize-and-repair-suspension-system-issues/ Tue, 30 Jul 2024 14:00:39 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=32985 Whatever you use your car for, every journey puts its components under strain. Over time, this chips away at their efficiency, gradually wearing them down to the point of complete failure. Your suspension system, in particular, does a ton of work to ensure you drive comfortably by compensating for bumps in the road. It also provides traction by helping your wheels maintain contact with the ground.

Needless to say, the suspension system is an incredibly important part of your vehicle, and it should be working properly at all times. So, how can you recognize potential problems before they get worse? Let’s look at some common suspension system issues and how you can diagnose them, plus tips for repairing them if you’d like to try.

What Are the Components of a Car’s Suspension System?

Your vehicle’s suspension system is made up of an intricate network of components. Here’s a quick overview of the core ones:

  • Springs: The link between the wheels and the car’s body, suspension springs compensate for uneven road surfaces to provide high levels of ride comfort.
  • Shock absorbers/struts: Shock absorbers and struts work together to control the movement of the springs and maintain tire contact with the road.
  • Control arms: Control arms connect the wheels to the chassis, maintaining stability, handling, and safety by ensuring wheel motion is controlled.
  • Bushings: These small rubber or polyurethane parts are fitted between suspension components to reduce friction and absorb minor shocks.
  • Ball joints: Located in your front suspension, ball joints allow the wheels to pivot smoothly.
  • Sway bars/stabilizer bars: The sway bar/stabilizer bar connects the left and right wheels through a torsion spring, keeping the vehicle more level and stable, thus improving handling and ride comfort.

Common Suspension Issues

There are various common suspension system issues you might encounter while out on the road, including:

1. Your vehicle pulls to one side.

If your vehicle pulls to one side while you’re driving, it could be a problem with your tires, brakes, or suspension system. Where your suspension system is concerned, if one of its components is damaged or malfunctioning (e.g., the struts, bearings, joints, or springs), it can affect your vehicle’s wheel alignment and cause this to happen. You may also see some uneven tire wear if the problem has been ongoing for a while.

2. Bouncing excessively on bumps and dips.

Your suspension system is designed to absorb the impact of potholes and bumps in the road so that you experience a smooth ride while you drive. So, if your vehicle starts to bounce excessively or it’s a bumpy ride, there’s probably a fault. Damaged struts or coil springs are the most likely culprits because if they are worn out and can’t dampen those impacts as intended, your car could start to feel like a trampoline.

3. One side or corner of your vehicle feels lower.

Your suspension ensures a smooth driving experience and helps support your vehicle. Damaged suspension components, such as a blown-out shock or weak springs, can cause the car to sink at one corner or even a whole side. The sinkage may be so severe that you can see it just by looking at the vehicle.

4. Dipping when braking.

When you hit the brakes, the forward momentum combined with your vehicle’s weight sends a lot of force to its front. If your suspension isn’t working, however, it won’t be able to compensate for this, so the front end will be pushed downward in a nose dive. You might also feel a rocking motion once you’ve come to a complete stop as the weight begins to balance out.

5. Steering becomes difficult.

Your steering wheel and suspension systems are directly tied to one another, so if something goes wrong with your suspension, you’ll most likely feel it in your steering. For example, the steering system might be more difficult to use, or you may feel your vehicle pulling to one side.

6. Your vehicle rolls to the side when cornering.

Just like your vehicle might dip when you brake, it could also roll to the side when you corner. This works in a similar way, as the sudden turn shifts the weight of your car, making it feel like it’s rolling in that direction.

4 Ways to Diagnose Suspension Problems

If you suspect you may be experiencing a problem with your suspension, there are a few ways you can attempt to diagnose it yourself:

  1. A visual inspection: Start with what you can see. Give everything a look over, and check for signs of damage, leaks, or wear on suspension parts.
  2. The bounce test: One by one, push down on each of the vehicle’s corners and let go. If there’s excessive bouncing as it returns to position, you have a problem.
  3. The road test: Take the vehicle out for a drive. Are there any issues with handling when you steer? Can you hear any unusual grinding or creaking noises? If something seems off, it could be your suspension.
  4. A tire inspection: Suspension problems often cause uneven wear on your tires. Check the tread for anything unusual.

Suspension Repair and Maintenance

Repairing the suspension system generally isn’t the most involved task, so there are some things you can try yourself if you’d like to avoid visiting an auto shop:

Shock Absorber and Strut Replacement

To replace the shocks and struts, first loosen the rear wheel bolts. Next, engage the parking brake, chock the front wheels, jack the car’s rear, and support it on axle stands. Remove the wheel, then remove the top and bottom shock absorber mounting bolts. Remove the shock absorber, fit the new one, and replace the bolts with the required torque rating.

Spring Replacement

Firstly, make sure the replacement spring is of the correct rating. It’s always best to replace both (front or back) springs at the same time so that they have matching ratings. Similar to repairing your shock absorbers, safely raise the vehicle and remove the wheel. Next, remove the assembly and take the strut assembly out of the cover. Take off the old spring and put on the new one, then reassemble everything.

Control Arm and Bushing Replacement

This job is usually best left to a certified mechanic, as it can be time-consuming and could damage your suspension system if not carried out properly. It also requires specific tools that you’re not likely to have in your home garage. You will need to remove the control arm, remove the old bushing, and replace it with a new one, but all of that is much easier with a hydraulic press to hand.

Ball Joint Replacement

Ball joints can be very tricky to access and install, especially with age and rust. Again, it’s a job best left to a professional, but for a quick overview of the process, it starts with taking off the wheel and then removing the brake calipers, rotor, and potentially the sway bar links, too. Next, carefully inspect and remove any snap rings that may be keeping the ball joint in place, then use a ball joint press to remove the old joint from the control arm and put a new one in.

Sway Bar Link Replacement

After safely raising the vehicle, remove the wheel and use the new sway bar link to help you identify the old one. Spray the fasteners at both ends of the link with penetrating fluid and leave them to sit for five minutes. Clamp a pair of vice grips onto the link or on the ball and socket to stop it from spinning, then use a ratchet to begin loosening the nut on one end. Repeat the process on the other end and take the link off. Now you’re free to replace it with a new one, but make sure to test it’s tight enough before you drive again.

Extended Warranties: Protecting Your Suspension System

The annual cost of car ownership is only ever on the rise, recently reaching over $12,000, according to AAA. With your suspension system under heavy strain whenever you’re out on the road, it’s one of the areas of your vehicle that’s most likely to experience unexpected component failure—and the price of repairs can be expensive. To protect themselves (and their wallets) from the financial burden, drivers across the U.S. are investing in an extended auto warranty. But which is right for you?

Your first option is a traditional extended warranty, which is usually purchased from your dealership or sometimes directly from your manufacturer. This effectively extends your vehicle’s factory warranty (a.k.a. manufacturer warranty) coverage beyond the expiry date, giving you the same peace of mind for longer.

While it sounds great on paper, there are some significant drawbacks to this kind of coverage. For example, the cost to purchase is usually so high it’s unlikely you’ll ever get your money’s worth. Any repairs can only be carried out at an authorized dealership, which isn’t ideal if you break down hundreds of miles from one. Worst of all, you’ll need an active factory warranty to qualify, ruling out used car owners almost completely.

As a result, a vehicle service contract from a third-party provider, like Endurance Warranty, is the more popular alternative. For starters, third-party providers offer almost as comprehensive coverage at an even better price point, usually throwing in some bonus perks to sweeten the deal. Repairs can be completed at any certified auto shop of your choice. Best of all, you can acquire this kind of coverage regardless of your factory warranty status. As long as you meet your chosen provider’s eligibility criteria, you’re good to go.

It’s worth pointing out that an extended warranty/vehicle service contract and auto insurance are two very different beasts. To be specific, an extended warranty/vehicle service contract is intended to protect you from repair bills incurred as a result of unexpected component failure. In contrast, auto insurance protects you from repair bills incurred as a result of a collision, extreme weather, or other such incident. Combining the two protects you from all angles, so it’s highly recommended that you invest in both if possible.

Choose Endurance for Total Driving Confidence

No matter how well you maintain your vehicle, no component lasts forever. When the inevitable breakdown occurs, you can almost guarantee it will happen at the worst possible moment, leaving you stranded far from home and facing an expensive repair bill. To drive with total confidence, you need an extended auto warranty watching out for you, and Endurance is America’s most trusted provider.

How to Diagnose a Coolant Leak in Your BMW https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/diagnose-a-coolant-leak-in-your-bmw/ Thu, 25 Jul 2024 11:05:37 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=32962 Your BMW is a finely crafted machine thanks to extensive engineering and meticulous manufacturing. Yet whether you drive a 2 Series, an X7, or anything in between, your car is vulnerable to breakdowns. One trouble spot involves a coolant leak. BMWs are no stranger to this issue, but the good news is that it’s a relatively easy problem to identify.

Keeping alert for a BMW coolant leak can prevent substantial engine damage and minimize repair costs. Fortunately, you don’t need extensive mechanical skills to stay ahead of this issue—just about any car owner can learn how to diagnose a coolant leak. Keep reading as we explore the significance of a coolant leak in a BMW and review the necessary steps to solve the problem.

Even if you don’t have the skills or desire to fix a BMW leaking coolant, identifying the trouble will help you be better informed when your car needs to be taken to the shop.

Coolant Basics

Before discussing the essentials of dealing with a coolant leak, it’s helpful to have a quick overview of your car’s cooling system. Like all modern cars with internal combustion engines, your BMW has a cooling system that absorbs heat from the engine, preventing overheating. It uses a radiator, a network of hoses, and other components (like the water pump) to accomplish this task. Central to this operation is the coolant, also called antifreeze, that runs throughout the system and helps extract excess heat.

Insufficient coolant due to a leak or a low level doesn’t allow the cooling system to be fully functional, making the engine run at a higher temperature. A heat buildup in the engine can eventually cause a cracked engine block, cylinder wall warping, and piston damage—troubles that come under the scary title of “catastrophic engine failure.”

A well-functioning cooling system is essential for ensuring peak engine performance and fostering longevity.

Recognizing Symptoms of a Coolant Leak

Spotting a coolant leak starts with recognizing common symptoms. Here are a few crucial signs that your BMW may be leaking coolant:

Low Coolant Level

A low coolant level is one of the most evident signs of a coolant leak, and most BMWs have a dashboard warning light to signal this problem. The level can also be observed via the coolant reservoir under the hood. Coolant needs to be occasionally topped off, but adding coolant more frequently is a strong indicator of a leak.

Engine Overheating

As mentioned, a well-running cooling system prevents the engine from overheating. A temperature gauge reading higher than normal or the engine temperature warning light coming on is another clear indicator that something is amiss with the cooling system.

Visible Coolant Accumulation

Coolant leaks can be easily detected if fluid accumulates under your car. After leaving your BMW parked for a while, check underneath (near the front of the car and under the engine) for any liquid on the ground. BMW coolant is usually a fluorescent green color (sometimes blue), so it can easily be distinguished from oil or water. A brightly colored puddle (or a few drops) means your coolant is leaking. Importantly, coolant is highly toxic to humans and animals, so it’s vital to keep children and pets, who might otherwise be attracted by the sweet smell and bright color, away.

Sweet Smell from the Engine Bay

Coolant has a sweet smell (a side effect of ethylene glycol, a key ingredient) that can help you detect leaks. You may notice a candy-like aroma after driving. If so, lift the hood to investigate further. An even stronger presence of a sweet scent signals a likely coolant leak.

Steam or White Smoke from the Exhaust

Exhaust gases should be invisible in most cases. However, steam or white smoke from the tailpipe is a classic sign of a blown head gasket. This causes coolant to mix with engine oil and burn off during combustion, requiring immediate attention from a professional mechanic.

PRO TIP: Review the owner’s manual to learn the meaning of your BMW’s different dashboard warning lights and the location of the cooling system reservoir.

Visual Inspection: How to Find the Leak

Once you suspect a coolant leak, the next step is to visually inspect your BMW’s cooling system. Shut off the engine and allow it to cool completely before investigating, as the coolant can be pressurized and extremely hot. A flashlight can help; wear gloves and protective eyewear. Here are the starting points.

Check the Radiator

Examine the radiator for any visible cracks, damage, or leaks. Focus areas should be on seams (corrosion is an issue) and adjacent plastic tanks, which are common failure points. Usually, all these areas should be clean and dry. So, any coolant seepage or wetness is a red flag.

Examine the Hoses

Coolant hoses are prone to cracking and other damage over time. Inspect each hose thoroughly, looking for bulging, deterioration, and other signs of wear. Pay particular attention to the underside or backside of a hose, which may escape visual inspection. Carefully running your hand across these areas can help check what the eye misses. At the same time, ensure hose clamps are secure and don’t appear to be misaligned.

Inspect the Water Pump

The water pump, a vital cooling system component, circulates coolant across the engine and through the radiator. Look for leaks along the gasket (where the pump and engine are joined) and the weep hole (a small opening that releases coolant if the internal seal fails)

Look for Leaks Around the Engine

Perform a detailed visual inspection of the engine. Areas where different components come together, like the engine block and cylinder head or the cylinder head and intake manifold, are especially vulnerable due to the use of gaskets. A build-up of coolant residue, staining, or wetness indicates a coolant leak.

PRO TIP: If you’re unsuccessful in locating a leak, try this cardboard hack: Place a large cardboard sheet (or a few pieces) under the front of your BMW. Ideally, it’s white cardboard (or you can tape white paper onto the surface). Do this as soon as you get home for the day and leave it to sit overnight. Be sure to place the material under the radiator and engine. In the morning, without moving the cardboard, look for drips and note where the stain is in relation to what’s above. This step will help you pinpoint where the leak is coming from. If the leak is minor, you may have to try this for multiple days.

Using UV Dye for Leak Detection

Locating a coolant leak can be tricky, especially in BMWs with crowded engine compartments. If a visual inspection (or the cardboard trick) fails to produce results, you’ll want to advance to UV dye detection. A UV (ultraviolet) light kit costs $20 to $40 and can be found at most auto supply stores or online.

The kit will have specific instructions, but here’s how the process works:

  1. Add the UV dye to your BMW’s coolant reservoir according to the product instructions.
  2. Run the engine for a while, allowing the dye to circulate through the cooling system.
  3. Inspect the engine, radiator, and hoses with the UV light, which should make any leak spots glow brightly.

4 Potential Leak Sources in BMWs

While coolant leaks can occur in any vehicle, certain BMW parts are more leak-prone. Typical leak sources include:

  1. Radiator: BMW radiators are usually made of metal. However, adjacent parts, like hose connections and expansion tanks, consist of plastic, making them vulnerable to cracking and deterioration. Failing radiator seams (where two metal components are joined) can also produce coolant leaks.
  2. Water Pump: A failing pump can leak coolant from its gasket or weephole. This is a known trouble spot in several BMW models, especially the X1, X3, X4, X5, and X6 crossovers. RepairPal says replacing a water pump in an X5 costs about $1,100.
  3. Hoses: Coolant hoses degrade over time, becoming brittle and cracked and creating the ideal setting for a coolant leak. Exposure to extreme temperatures and chemical contaminants can accelerate hose deterioration.
  4. Head Gasket: A head gasket seals the connection between the cylinder head and the engine block—damage to the seal results in compromised engine cooling and the potential for significant engine damage. Specific model years of the BMW X1, X3, 3 Series, and 5 Series are notorious for head gasket problems.  RepairPal estimates that replacing the head gasket in a 325i costs as much as $3,400.

Addressing the Leak: Immediate Actions

Once you’ve identified the source of the coolant leak, it’s crucial to deal with the issue promptly to prevent further damage. Here are some immediate actions you can take:

Repair or Replace the Leaking Component

Depending on the severity and location of the leak, you may need to replace hoses, gaskets, or even major components like the radiator or water pump. If you’re comfortable with basic automotive repairs, you can handle some of these tasks yourself. However, it’s best to rely on a qualified repair shop for more complex issues like a damaged head gasket.

Refill the Coolant

After repairing the leak, refill the coolant reservoir with the correct coolant mixture (refer to the owner’s manual). If the coolant level is significantly depleted, you may need to bleed the system of air deposits after refilling the coolant. Again, depending on your skill level, bleeding the cooling system may require a BMW repair professional.

Monitor the Coolant Level

In the days following the repair, keep a close eye on your BMW’s coolant level. Check the reservoir daily to ensure the level remains stable and no new leaks have developed. Respond immediately if the coolant level drops.

How to Replace Air Filters Without Risking Your Warranty https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/replace-air-filters-without-risking-your-warranty/ Thu, 13 Jun 2024 11:15:09 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=32826 Your vehicle’s engine air filter is responsible for removing dust and contaminants from the air that gets pulled into the engine. When it gets old, a clogged air filter won’t be able to do its job properly, and your engine performance could suffer, or you could end up with other issues like reduced fuel efficiency. For the most part, you should replace your vehicle’s air filter once every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. This will ensure that you don’t end up with problems and that your engine can stay in good shape for as long as possible.

As a car owner, while it is important to change your filter regularly to keep your engine running smoothly, it’s also essential if you don’t want to void your vehicle’s factory warranty. Many factory warranties explicitly require you to stay on top of regular maintenance, including air filter changes, spark plug replacements, and oil changes. You also want to be sure that when you change the filter, you are keeping in compliance with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Knowing how to replace engine air filters without risking your warranty will help you make the right choices and keep your vehicle in great shape for a long time.

Understanding Warranty Compliance for Car Air Filters

When you buy a new car, it will be covered by a factory warranty provided by the manufacturer. This warranty is usually good for anywhere between three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 60,000 miles. During this time period, if an issue arises with your vehicle through no fault of your own, you can take it to the dealership to have it repaired under your warranty coverage.

There are, however, almost always going to be requirements to keep your vehicle covered. While they may not specifically include air filter changes, they might require regularly scheduled maintenance. If you don’t want to void your vehicle’s factory warranty, it is a good idea to change your air filters on schedule and do it properly.

How to Choose the Right Air Filter

It is incredibly important that you choose the right replacement air filter for your vehicle at the auto parts store if you want to keep your factory warranty coverage active. While there are plenty of aftermarket automotive options available to you when it comes to engine air filters, it will always be best to make sure you are using an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) component.

OEM air filters will be the same brand and model that came with your vehicle and are your best bet when it comes to keeping your warranty valid. Plus, you can be sure that they are compatible with your vehicle and will offer the same level of protection for your engine, which is essential.

Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Your Car’s Air Filter

Replacing a car engine air filter is a relatively simple job that should only take a few minutes.

  1. First, you will open the vehicle’s hood and locate the air filter housing. Most of the time, this housing can be opened using plastic latches or clamps on the side, but some makes, and models will require a screwdriver or wingnuts that you have to remove.
  2. Open the housing (or air filter box) and note how the old air filter is placed inside. If possible, take a photo of it so you can reference it when you put the new one in. The old, dirty air filter will most likely be discolored, which is a sign that it is time to replace it.
  3. Put the new air filter in the housing in the same manner as the old one, lining it up properly with any tabs or guidelines. The filter has to be put in correctly; otherwise, it won’t make a tight seal, and it will let dirt and grime into the engine.
  4. Once you have the new filter in, gently close the housing and the hood.
  5. Start the vehicle and listen for any strange noises like humming or whirring. This can be a sign that the new filter isn’t properly aligned in the housing. If you don’t hear any new noises, your new filter should be ready for at least another 12,000 miles.

When to Consult a Professional

If you want to be certain that your new air filter is put in properly and that the right tools and materials are used, it is always best to have the job done by a professional mechanic. A professional can consult your factory warranty and your owner’s manual and will make sure that everything is done correctly so your warranty stays valid.

If possible, take your car to the dealership’s service center and have them replace the filter per your service manual. This is the best way to get peace of mind that your warranty is not being voided and that you are getting the best service possible for your engine air filter replacement.

Documenting Your Maintenance for Warranty Purposes

The other benefit of having your filter replaced by a professional shop is that you can get the proper documentation. When you take your vehicle in for an auto repair that should be covered by your factory warranty, the dealership may want to see proof that you have kept up with the scheduled maintenance.

While you can keep your own documentation when you do car maintenance yourself, your odds of having your warranty claim approved by the manufacturer are much higher if you have an invoice for maintenance procedures by a professional mechanic. It is even better to have it all documented at the dealership, which makes the dealer shop a great choice for your maintenance needs, at least while your factory warranty is still valid.

How Air Filter Maintenance Enhances Extended Warranty Benefits

Once your factory warranty is up, you will be financially responsible for any automotive repairs that have to be done on your vehicle, whether they are a result of a factory flaw or not. If you want to make sure that you are still covered, an extended car warranty, which is more accurately called a vehicle service contract (VSC) or auto protection plan, is a great option. Third-party extended warranties can offer excellent coverage that will help you keep your car running smoothly for a long time and give you the help you need when the time comes to get a repair done.

By keeping up with your air filter replacements, you can keep your auto protection plan valid and increase your odds of getting claims approved. Keeping clean air filters in your vehicle is a low-cost way to keep your engine running smoothly and prevent any issues.

If you have a cap on your extended warranty coverage, this frees up money for other repairs that may be more pressing. Regularly changing the air filter will also help you get the repair you need by showing that you are staying on top of maintenance, which may be a requirement for your VSC coverage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

One of the biggest mistakes to avoid when changing out engine air filters is using the wrong type. While there are all kinds of air filter brands and models to choose from, not all of them will be approved by your warranty provider, whether it is a third-party company or the manufacturer. By only using OEM equipment when you replace components, you can be sure that your coverage will remain valid and that you can get the help you need when the time comes.

You should also be sure that the filter is put in correctly when replacing an old one in the housing. If the filter is not airtight, it could let in dirt, road debris, and dust. This will quickly cause issues with your engine and may even void your warranty. Because of how important proper installation is, it is almost always a better idea to have it done by a professional instead of doing it yourself.

How to Check Fluid Levels and Top-Off Your Car https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/check-fluid-levels-and-top-off-your-car/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 18:00:15 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=32797 A vehicle is a complex machine with a myriad of parts working perfectly together to propel you down the road at a high rate of speed. Even a single part under the hood that is out of working order can have detrimental effects on your vehicle as a whole. However, an often overlooked aspect of maintaining your vehicle’s health is paying attention to the fluid levels under the hood.

While the mechanical parts certainly keep your vehicle moving, the fluids running throughout your car act much like blood moving through the human body. Without adequate oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, and many other fluids, your vehicle will quickly come to a stop.

Learn how to check and top off the various crucial fluids in your vehicle to keep it in top shape.

Safety First: Preparing to Check Your Automotive Fluids

Before checking the fluids under the hood of your car, ensure you are taking precautionary safety measures. First and foremost, you want your vehicle to be on a completely flat surface so that the readings you take are accurate and not skewed.

Additionally, your car should be off for a moderate period of time so that the fluids have a chance to cool off in case they splash against your skin. Finally, get all the materials you will need, such as a dipstick, gloves, goggles, and other protective items, before starting the process.

Fluid Checks and Topping Off Engine Oil

One of the most important fluids under the hood is engine oil, and it is also one of the easiest fluids to check and change. For newer vehicles, you may simply be able to check the oil level from the dashboard of your vehicle.

However, for older models, to check the current level of your engine oil, pop the hood of your car. Locate the oil dipstick, which typically has an orange or yellow circular handle and is usually on the left side of the engine.

Pull the dipstick out, wipe it off with a cloth, and then put it back in. The stick will have a minimum and maximum mark. If the oil line is at least halfway between the minimum and maximum mark, you don’t need to add oil. If it is below that point or at the minimum line, you should add oil.

To top off on oil, locate the oil cap on the engine — this will typically be marked with the symbol of an oil can. With the correct oil for your vehicle (refer to your owner’s manual if you aren’t certain what type you need), pour in the oil a little bit at a time and use the dipstick to check the level until it is at a satisfactory level.

Maintaining Proper Coolant Levels

In most cases, you can find the coolant under the hood of your car stored in a translucent container on the upper right-hand side of your engine. There is a ‘L’ for low and a ‘F’ for full on the tank, which means you don’t even need to screw the top up in order to check the level.

To replace the fluid once it falls below the low line, simply unscrew the cap and fill it back up to the maximum level. As with the oil, refer to your owner’s manual for the type of coolant your vehicle uses.

Brake Fluid Inspection and Refill

Similar to the coolant container, there is also a brake reservoir container under the hood. Specifically, it can be located on the master cylinder, which you should refer to your owner’s manual for assistance locating on your specific vehicle. This reservoir will also have a maximum and minimum line.

Assuming your brake fluid is near the minimum line, you should first have your vehicle’s brakes inspected to ensure they haven’t been damaged by the fluid getting low. Once you are certain your brakes are fine, simply screw off the cap on the reservoir and refill the fluid.

Transmission Fluid: Ensuring Smooth Operation

Checking the level of transmission fluid under the hood is nearly the exact same process as looking at the car’s oil level. Generally, the dipstick for transmission fluid will be located on the back side of the car’s engine near where the transmission meets the engine block. As you would do with oil, remove the transmission fluid dipstick, wipe it off with a cloth, and put it back in. Remove the dipstick again and check where the line of liquid falls between the minimum and maximum lines. Top off your vehicle as needed.

Extended Warranties and Fluid Maintenance: Ensuring Long-Term Care

Regardless of whether you drive a new or old vehicle, it’s only natural to want to extend its lifespan. This want becomes a need when you have an extended warranty contract associated with your vehicle. Nearly all extended warranty contracts stipulate that to keep the policy active, you need to take care of preventative maintenance at the correct service intervals.

Naturally, extended warranty providers make their money off the price you pay for your contract, and the benefit you receive is financial coverage in the event of mechanical breakdowns. If your vehicle isn’t maintained, though, it can end up costing an extended warranty provider far more than it’s worth to issue the contract, which is why the stipulation is in place. Replacing the fluids under the hood of your car is one such task that qualifies as preventative maintenance. This is due to the fact that having adequate fluid keeps all the machinery working properly.

Documenting Your Maintenance for Warranty Purposes

If you have an extended warranty contract on your used car, the best practice is to document all of your maintenance tasks. Keep receipts for any fluids you purchase, and make a note of when you top off the fluids. Perhaps even take photos or videos as proof of what you are doing. In the event of a mechanical breakdown, the extended warranty provider you use may request proof that you have taken care of maintenance tasks.

When not taking your car to a dealership or mechanic for fluid replacements, the only proof you will have is what you retain. Therefore, save as much as possible so that you don’t run into issues during the claim submission process.

Vehicle Fluid FAQs

Drivers often have a myriad of questions when tackling fluid maintenance on their vehicles. The following five are among the most commonly asked questions to be aware of:

What are the 7 main fluids in a car?

There are many fluids under the hood of your car, but some are more vital than others. The seven main fluids within your vehicle are oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, radiator fluid, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and A/C coolant. Depending on the type of vehicle you own, it’s possible to have more, but the aforementioned are in all other vehicles.

How often are you supposed to check fluids under the hood?

As a general rule of thumb, it’s advised to check your car’s fluid levels at least once a month. The best time to DIY this is when you are filling up at the gas station, but it can really be handled at any point. This doesn’t mean the fluids need to be replaced once a month, but staying up to date on the levels is crucial.

How expensive is replacing fluids in a car?

Costs can vary dramatically depending on the type of fluid you are changing under the hood. Use the following guidance as a best practice:

  • Motor oil changes can cost somewhere between $35-$75
  • Transmission fluid changes can cost somewhere between $80-$250
  • Brake fluid changes can cost somewhere between $80-$130
  • Radiator fluid changes can cost somewhere between $131-$209
  • Power steering fluid changes can cost somewhere between $90-$125
  • Windshield wiper fluid changes can cost somewhere between $5-$10
  • A/C coolant changes can cost up to $200

Why is it important to check your vehicle’s fluids regularly?

Many of the parts under the hood of a car need to be lubricated regularly or are powered by the fluids themselves. With fluid levels being too low or entirely running out, the parts can potentially be damaged or not operate at peak performance.

Do you check car fluids hot or cold?

Almost every fluid under your car’s hood should only be checked when the car is off, and the fluid isn’t steaming hot. The only exception to this rule is windshield wiper fluid, which is not pressurized and will remain cool at all times, so it can also be checked at all times.

How to Prepare Your Electric Vehicle for Warmer Months https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/prepare-your-electric-vehicle-for-warmer-months/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 09:29:13 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=32491 Fluctuating temperatures can have a dramatic impact on your vehicle’s performance. Just like you winterize your vehicle when the temperatures begin to drop, it is equally important to prepare for sunny summer days. As the temperatures rise this summer, preparing your electric vehicle (EV) for the warmer months can avoid major car repairs.

As the seasons change, so should your car’s maintenance routine. Taking some time to prepare can help your EV run better and last longer.

3 Best Practices for Daily EV Battery Care

Rather than running on gasoline or diesel fuel like a traditional internal combustion vehicle (ICE), electric vehicles (EVs) are powered by a rechargeable battery. Most EVs and even some plug-in hybrid vehicles run on a lithium-ion battery, allowing them to run without depending on fossil fuels.

Everything on electric vehicles depends on the battery — from the motor to the power, electronics run on the battery. Just as when you use your phone or other lithium-ion powered devices, usage can generate heat. These batteries can be sensitive to extreme hot or cold temperatures. Therefore, attention to careful thermal management is essential to prevent overheating, especially in the summer.

Not keeping up with proper EV care and maintenance can lead to battery failure or even irreparable damage. EV battery replacement or EV car repairs can be expensive. However, with careful use and keeping up with routine car maintenance, the battery may last the lifetime of the vehicle. These daily practices can protect an electric vehicle’s battery and prepare it for hot summer weather.

1. Monitor Battery Temperature

Monitor the battery temperature to maintain your EVs’ peak performance and durability. Most EV batteries are capable of operating in a wide range of temperatures before battery failure. However, that doesn’t mean that hotter conditions don’t impact them. Studies show that higher temperatures can reduce EV battery performance by up to 31%.

To reduce the impact of the heat of sunny days, try parking your electric vehicle in shaded areas whenever possible. Choosing a parking spot under a shade tree can prevent the battery from overheating. Avoid exposing the battery to direct sunlight for extended periods to prevent early battery degradation.

2. Ensure Proper Ventilation

Heat has a tendency to gather around the battery since it is the powerhouse of the vehicle. If your electric vehicle has a battery cooling system, this built-in system prevents your battery from overheating. Proper air ventilation around the battery pack disperses excess heat to keep your battery within the prime temperature range.

Routine electric vehicle maintenance prevents overheating issues. Regularly remove any accumulated sand, dirt, or other debris around the cooling system to facilitate efficient heat dissipation and avoid overheating during the hot summer months.

3. Avoid Mid-Day Charging

Mid-day charging is a good idea to avoid with an electric vehicle. It is the hottest part of the day, and charging generates heat, too. Consider charging your electric vehicle early in the morning, around sunset, to minimize heat-related battery stress. Charge your EV during non-peak temperatures to maintain your battery’s health and EV performance.

Cooling Systems Care and Maintenance for Your EV

Electric car manufacturers like Tesla, Hyundai, and BMW have designed incredibly effective cooling systems to keep the battery safe since the battery is the heart of every electric vehicle. This highly important cooling system keeps the right temperature range for the battery and onboard charging components. Check each part of your cooling system to prepare your EV for the summer.

Radiator

The EV has a cooling loop that uses an electric pump to circulate air or liquid coolant. This cooling system helps keep the battery, electronics, motor, and related systems cool. The radiator takes excess heat and releases it into the surrounding air. Check the radiator for damage or rust, and make sure it isn’t blocked.

Coolant Levels

If your EV uses liquid coolant, regularly check the coolant levels and scan the system to make sure there aren’t any leaks. In these types of systems, liquid coolant flows through the cooling loop, absorbing heat and then releasing it away from critical heat-sensitive components.

Not all EVs use liquid coolant. Some rely on fan-powered air cooling to regulate their temperature.

Fans

Electric cars that rely on air cooling or have a combination hybrid cooling system use a cooling fan to regulate their temperatures. This fan is an integral part of your cooling system. Just like the liquid coolant prevents heat buildup around the battery, the fan moves air around the battery, keeping it from getting too hot.

Fans are critical for cooling the EV. Their thermoregulation systems adjust the fan speed based on the surrounding outside temperature as well as the driving and charging activities. Make sure the fans are in prime working order to keep your battery cool this summer when the temperatures spike.

Hire a Professional

Due to the complexity and importance of the electric vehicle cooling system, it is a good idea to have an ASE Certified professional help maintain your EV. A cooling system check-up can help spot any issues that might not be obvious during a regular inspection, ensuring your cooling system is ready to handle the additional cooling demands of summer.

Software Updates and Vehicle Settings

Updating the software and EV vehicle settings is another summer maintenance step for electric vehicle owners. Software updates enhance both the efficiency and performance of the vehicle. They also improve battery management, optimize energy consumption, and enhance overall EV functionality.

EV settings can boost vehicle performance while also enhancing the EV owner experience. For example, climate control settings keep the interior temperature of the electric vehicle at a comfortable temperature without making the vehicle work too hard. You can even use these settings to pre-cool the interior of the cabin before getting in. Effectively using vehicle settings reduces the impact of excessive strain and heat buildup on the battery.

Additionally, adjusting regenerative braking settings and modifying energy recovery levels improves the EV’s range and efficiency in hot weather. Regenerative braking gives a small amount of energy from breaking back to the battery rather than losing it to heat, maximizing energy usage. You can access these settings on the vehicle’s onboard computer system or manufacturer-provided software updates.

4 Tips for Tire Maintenance and Efficiency

Summer often means summer road trips to exciting vacation destinations. Unfortunately, being stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire with the sun scorching down isn’t high on anyone’s summer bucket list. Get your electric vehicle ready for the hot summer months with these tire maintenance tips:

1. Check Tire Pressure

Check your tire pressure regularly, especially during hot weather. Tires are more likely to pop in summer than at any other time of the year. Hot summer days (and hotter summer pavement) can cause the air in the tire to expand, increasing tire pressure, potentially beyond what the tire can handle. Maintain the recommended pressure levels to avoid dangerous overinflation.

2. Inspect Tire Tread

Examine your tire tread depth to ensure sufficient grip on the road. The tread pattern on your tire sheds water and debris off the tire while maintaining traction. Tire tread also helps your EV accelerate and brake safely. Worn-out tires with low tread can be dangerous, especially in hot weather conditions.

3. Rotate Your Tires

Your tires tend to wear out as you rack up mileage. Think of the rubber eraser on the end of the pencil. The more you use it, the more it wears down. Similarly, tire rubber also wears out.

Treads can wear out unevenly, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions. Regularly rotating your tires helps promote even wear and extends their lifespan. This maintenance practice is essential for optimal traction and stability, especially in hot weather and extreme temperatures.

4. Get an Alignment Check

Every jarring pothole, speed bump, and accidental drive-thru curb check can knock your tires out of alignment. Out-of-alignment tires often wear unevenly, reducing mileage capabilities and making your vehicle harder to handle, which can be exacerbated in hot temperatures. Get your tires aligned to ensure they are properly positioned.

Extended Car Warranties for Electric Vehicles and EV Care

Although electric vehicles are considered reliable, they can still experience mechanical issues. In the grand scheme, EVs are still a relatively new concept and have some systems to perfect. For example, some EV owners have claimed that they experience issues with charging systems, batteries, and other motor functions, all of which are costly car repairs if paid out of pocket. An extended warranty can help absorb and protect you from these unexpected costs.

Endurance Warranty’s auto protection plans for electric vehicles and hybrids provide comprehensive coverage for major components, like the ever-important battery and cooling systems, particularly in Tesla models. These plans are tailored to the unique needs of EV owners during the summer months. However, coverage will vary depending on your vehicle and contract.

How to Prepare for Summer Road Trips

According to a recent study, more than 200 million Americans plan to take road trips during the summer. This accounts for more than 80% of the population. If you are one of these drivers, you’ll want to take these steps to prepare an electric vehicle for summer travel:

1. Plan Your Route

Before heading out on your summer road trip with your EV, it’s a good idea to map your route to include charging stops. Make sure charging stations are available at regular intervals along the way to avoid running out of battery power.

Some of the most common charging stations are the Tesla Superchargers, which you don’t necessarily have to own a Tesla to use. If the station is equipped with a Magic Dock adapter or if you have an NACS-equipped vehicle, you can use these chargers, too. Non-Tesla CCS1-equipped vehicles can also use them with a NACS DC adapter provided by Tesla or the vehicle’s manufacturer. Unfortunately, vehicles using an incompatible CHAdeMO plug, like the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, cannot use these charging stations.

2. Consider the Impact of Higher Temperatures

Higher summer temperatures affect the travel range of your EV, and reduced mileage can impact your summer plan. Be sure to adjust your charging stops accordingly. Additionally, be sure to choose shade over the closest spot. Try to park your electric car in shaded areas whenever possible to prevent battery overheating.

3. Check Charging Infrastructure Availability

Before beginning your summer vacation, check the availability of charging infrastructure on your route. You may want to make sure that charging stations are operational and accessible to avoid any inconvenience during your trip.

Electric Vehicle FAQs

Do I need to precondition the battery in the summer?

Electric vehicle batteries charge best around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Preconditioning the battery of an electric vehicle in the winter warms it up so it can charge more efficiently, but it is not necessary in the summer.

How hot is too hot for an electric car?

Electric vehicles function in a wide range of temperatures, but extreme heat can still impact their performance. Temperatures above 100°F (38°C) can start to affect an electric car’s efficiency and range. Keep an eye on the battery temperature and take precautions to prevent your EV from overheating, especially in sweltering summer heat.

Do electric vehicles need to be warmed up before driving away from a charging station?

While it isn’t necessary to warm up the battery before driving away from a charging station, “warming up” the vehicle allows your vehicle’s interior to come to a comfortable temperature. Your car has to use some of its battery reserves to cool (or heat) the cabin, reducing overall vehicle range. Maintaining the interior temperature uses less battery power than using the air conditioning to bring it to the right temperature. Therefore, having it warmed up before unplugging can keep you on the road longer.

How does temperature impact EV range?

According to Consumer Reports, cold weather resulted in the shortest EV range. Surprisingly, warmer days resulted in a more extended range. However, it is interesting to note that electric vehicles get a better range in stop-and-go traffic than on the highway, the opposite of a gas-powered car.

Prepare for Summer with an Extended Car Warranty

Maintaining the EV battery, cooling systems, and software is important for keeping your electric car running smoothly, even in hot summer weather. However, mechanical breakdowns are inevitable, no matter what kind of car you drive. Endurance Warranty plans for Tesla EVs and hybrid vehicles can help you feel confident on the road ahead.

How to Change the Oil in Your Kia Soul https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/change-the-oil-in-your-kia-soul/ Thu, 04 Jan 2024 10:30:48 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=27660 Taking care of maintenance items on your vehicle is one of the most important tasks a Kia Soul driver – or any car owner – needs to remember. While maintenance can seem tedious, it’s crucial in preventing major repairs from being needed, which may come with astronomical repair costs.

One of the most essential of these maintenance tasks to remember is changing the oil in your Kia Soul. Engine oil is an often overlooked component under the hood despite being one of the most important items.

Learn everything you need to know about changing the oil in your Kia Soul to keep your vehicle operational on the road.

Regular Oil Changes and Kia Soul Reliability

As mentioned, an oil change is one of the most overlooked tasks for Kia Soul owners, even though the owner’s manual walks drivers through the process. However, understanding why oil changes are so important can help any driver remember to handle the job.

Motor oil is essential because it acts as the blood of your vehicle. Without oil, the machinery in your engine will fail to work properly, and major breakdowns can occur. Engine oil acts as a lubricant as it moves throughout the engine to reduce friction, cool the materials, and even clean dirt and grime.

Most Kia Soul models utilize synthetic oil, often containing key additives that help your engine maintain its performance over time. The specific amount of time that can go by before an oil change is recommended will vary depending on the year of your Kia Soul and other factors, but it’s generally recommended to change the oil level every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if you use conventional oil and every 7,500 miles if you use synthetic oil.

Tools and Materials Needed for an Oil Change

Believe it or not, you don’t need to take your vehicle to a dealership or repair shop for an oil change. Knowing how to change the oil on your own Kia Soul is a valuable skill, so take the opportunity to learn how to tackle the task on your own.

To begin, you will need to gather certain tools and materials to successfully complete this DIY job:

  • Ratchet and Socket Set: Removing your oil filter and draining the oil will likely be a greasy and slippery task, so having a specialized oil filter ratchet or socket can help you get a better grip.
  • Wrenches: Along the same line of thinking, wrenches will allow you to gain leverage if any bolts need to be loosened underneath the hood of your Kia Soul.
  • Maintenance Ramps: This is an optional tool but can be beneficial. Maintenance ramps are inclines placed in front of your vehicle, which you drive your front tires on and then park. Blocks are then placed behind your rear wheels for safety, allowing you to get under the front of your car more easily.
  • Hydraulic Floor Jack: An alternative to maintenance ramps can be using a hydraulic floor jack to lift up your vehicle for easy access to the bottom.
  • Safety Glasses and Gloves: Working with oil can be messy, and safety should always come first, so keeping your eyes protected is important. Oil may also get on your hands and into your eyes later if you don’t wear gloves, so be sure to keep your hands covered.
  • A Set of Rags: As mentioned, an oil change will get messy, especially if it’s your first time. Having a set of disposable rags handy can be extremely beneficial in cleaning up any mess that develops.
  • Funnel: When you add new oil to your automobile, you’ll find that the hole is tiny for simply aiming the bottle. Having a funnel will help ensure you don’t needlessly spill oil.
  • Drain Container: One of the most important tasks is draining the old oil out of your vehicle, which needs to go somewhere. This is exactly what an oil pan or a drain container is for.
  • Creeper: A creeper is a rolling board that you can lay on in order to make rolling underneath your vehicle easier, and it is highly recommended.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

Once you have gathered all of the above tools, it’s important to take a few safety precautions before diving into the job:

  • Park on level ground: To ensure all oil is drained properly, you should park your vehicle on level ground. For those who have conducted an oil change before, a jack or maintenance ramp can be used so long as you understand where the oil will be collected.
  • Allow the engine to cool: It’s a good idea to change your oil shortly after driving as it will be looser and drain easier. However, allow your engine to cool completely before you begin the process.
  • Wear your PPE: Don’t forget to wear your glasses and gloves before changing the oil on your Kia Soul. Oil is corrosive, and getting it on your skin or eyes is not ideal.

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Oil in a Kia Soul

With all your tools gathered and the above precautions, it’s finally time to dive into the oil change. Below are five steps to changing the oil in your Kia Soul quickly and efficiently:

1. Park the vehicle and set the brake.

The first step in the process will be getting your Kia Soul into the right position, whether on maintenance ramps, utilizing a jack, or just parking it on level ground in your garage. Pop the hood and prop it up, then ensure your parking brake is on so that you know your car isn’t going anywhere. Remember to use back wheel chocks on the rear tires for safety purposes.

2. Remove the oil drain plug.

The 2014-2019 Kia Soul models had an easy access hole to drain the oil and remove the filter, making the task a breeze for people with those models. However, newer Kia Souls and certain models require removing 10mm bolts and a skid panel to expose the oil filter and drain plug.

Once this is exposed, use a 17mm socket (adjust depending on your Kia Soul) to remove the drain plug bolt. Ensure your drain pan or oil pan is underneath the hole at this point. Once the bolt is loose, continue to loosen it with your hands. Allow the oil to drain.

3. Replace the oil filter.

There will also be an oil filter underneath the hood of your Kia Soul near the drain. This should twist with a pull of your hand and be a quick replacement job. Pliers may be needed to remove it for the filter change, but be cautious as some oil may still be in the filter. Screw in the new oil filter after you have removed the old one.

4. Secure the drain and filter.

Once all the oil has completely finished draining and your filter has been replaced, reverse the prior two steps to secure the pieces back under the hood on your Kia Soul.

5. Add engine oil.

With everything secured, get your new engine oil and unscrew the cap. Insert your funnel into the oil filler hole under the hood. Slowly begin to pour the oil into your engine and add as much as the owner’s manual tells you to. Once you have finished, check the engine oil level to ensure it is below the full mark but above the low mark.

Tips for Disposing of Used Oil Responsibly

One of the biggest issues Kia Soul drivers, and all drivers in general, have regarding completing an oil change by themselves is getting rid of the old oil. Remember that, regardless of the type of oil, it’s important to dispose of it adequately. Since engine oil is considered hazardous waste, the easiest way to eliminate it is to take it to a household hazardous waste collection facility or a used oil collection site.

Assuming no recycling site is in your immediate area, auto parts stores such as AutoZone, Walmart, and others may accept the oil. Refer to signs within your local shops to determine whether your oil can be taken here. Under no circumstances should oil simply be dumped out, and it’s actually illegal to dispose of it incorrectly, so be sure to take the aforementioned steps.

Advantages of Regular Maintenance for Vehicle Longevity

The above DIY oil change outline shows that vehicle maintenance is extremely important. These tasks matter so much because smaller maintenance items keep major parts under the hood in working order. When maintenance tasks are overlooked, a greater strain is placed on those major parts (such as the engine or transmission).

Unfortunately, for many drivers who overlook these tasks, those major parts break down faster and come with a higher cost. While paying for maintenance tasks such as tire rotations or replacements, coolant changes, filter replacements, and more may seem tedious, it’s a nominal price compared to the thousands of dollars often required to repair something such as the engine of your Kia Soul.

For perspective, the average annual maintenance cost on a Kia Soul is only $437, which isn’t expensive compared to the potential cost you may face by neglecting crucial tasks.

A Kia Soul oil change is just the beginning regarding taking care of your vehicle. Every vehicle has different recommended maintenance tasks, so take the time to refer to your owner’s manual to see the recommended maintenance schedule. Even something as simple as remembering to change your spark plugs can keep your Kia Soul engine in working order.

Protecting Your Vehicle with Endurance

Oil changes are just the tip of the iceberg regarding maintenance tasks that should be handled on your Kia Soul. However, even the most dedicated driver performing maintenance at every proper interval can run into problems.

After all, a vehicle is still a piece of machinery that can easily break. Ensuring you have a comprehensive extended warranty (more accurately called a vehicle service contract) tied to your vehicle, especially one that offers coverage for maintenance items, can save you both time and money.

Endurance Warranty offers numerous auto protection plans for drivers, each with varying levels of protection to suit your needs and are customizable. The most popular Supreme plan offers the closest level of protection to a manufacturer’s warranty, with major components such as the engine, transmission, and fuel system, along with minor components such as gaskets, seals, and more all covered.

Those seeking lighter protection or specific protection may prefer the Superior and Secure Plus plans, which offer protection for the most common parts and older vehicles, respectively.

In addition to the protection featured above in each package, Endurance offers Elite Benefits for a small activation fee. These benefits provide contract holders with bonus perks such as reimbursements for up to four tires per year due to road hazards, 24/7 roadside assistance, up to $1,000 in total loss protection, and much more.

How to Change the Oil in Your Toyota Camry https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/change-the-oil-in-your-toyota-camry/ Wed, 27 Dec 2023 12:41:22 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=27595 As a car owner, your biggest responsibility is keeping your vehicle in good condition. Regular maintenance and scheduled service will go a long way toward keeping your car running smoothly for many years.

Vehicles regularly serviced and kept on a proper maintenance schedule will have fewer problems and are less likely to develop the big, expensive issues that can make owning a car a major financial burden. Out of all the different maintenance procedures, though, getting regular oil changes is perhaps the most important.

When you don’t change your vehicle’s oil often enough, the oil in the engine will start to break down and get dirty. This can cause all kinds of issues, not the least of which is a failure to lube the moving parts of the engine, such as the pistons and camshafts. When the oil gets dirty and old, it can also gum up and clog the small intake openings throughout the engine and cause serious damage. Because of this, it is important to change your oil every 5,000 to 10,000 miles.

The Toyota Camry is a car that has built its reputation on dependability and reliable operation. Like any other car, though, it will only deliver if properly cared for. Changing the oil yourself is relatively simple and quick if you want to save money on your Camry’s maintenance.

Preparing for Your Toyota Camry Oil Change: Tools and Materials Needed

While changing the oil in a Toyota Camry is fairly easy, you should have all your tools and materials ready to go before you begin. The last thing you want is to get halfway through the process and find that you are missing something. Laying out all your materials and tools beforehand will let you get a good look at what you have and make sure you are ready to start the process.

Automotive Tools

A floor jack, jack stand, or tire ramp is the most important tool for changing the motor oil in a Toyota Camry. You will have to get under the car to change the oil, and while you might be able to wriggle under without elevating it, it won’t be as easy as it should be. You will also have to have a 14-millimeter wrench to unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the car and let out the old oil. You should be sure to have a drain pan to drain the old oil and a funnel to help you put the new oil in the engine.

Oil Filter and Motor Oil

The only materials you need to change the oil in a Toyota Camry are a new oil filter and new oil. Check your owner’s manual before you buy oil for your car. It will tell you what weight the oil should be, whether it should be synthetic or conventional, the type of filter change, and the oil change interval.

Oil weight is the measurement of the oil flow when the vehicle is at running temperature, and you must use the correct one. If your Camry is from the model year 2009 or later, it will most likely use 0w-20 full synthetic oil. If made before 2009, it will generally use 5w-30 full synthetic oil. You should check your owner’s manual to be sure, though, because some engine types require different oil weights.

When you change the oil in your car, you should always change the oil filter. Oil circulates through the vehicle and runs through the oil filter, which cleans out all the dirt and debris in the oil. This ensures that these contaminants don’t make it into the engine so your vehicle can run cleanly, and the oil will stay in better condition for longer. When you go to the auto parts store, all you have to do is tell the service technicians the model year of your Camry, and they will get you the correct thread size and depth for your new filter.

How to Change the Oil and Safety Precautions for Oil Changes

Changing the oil in your Toyota Camry is relatively safe, but there are some precautions you should take. When putting your car on jacks, be sure to use a solid point on the chassis and not a point on the body.

You should also ensure that you have put the car in park and engaged the emergency brake, especially if you use ramps instead of a floor jack. Any time you have to get under your car, it is always better to double-check that it is stable and that you will be safe when you are down there.

It may also be a good idea to wear safety goggles when unscrewing the drain plug on your Camry. Sometimes, the oil will be under a slight amount of pressure, especially if the vehicle has only just cooled down, and this can cause oil to spurt a little bit when you unscrew the plug. Getting oil in your eyes is never fun, so it is better to be safe than sorry.

Draining the Old Oil: A Step-by-Step Process

  1. Find the drain plug – Once your Camry is up on jacks or elevated on the tire ramps, you can get under it and look for the drain plug. On the Camry, the plug is located directly under the driver’s seat, and it will have a bolt head and a washer.
  2. Center the drain pan – Place the oil drain pan underneath the plug and make sure it is lined up right in the center with plenty of room for the draining oil to splash without getting on your driveway.
  3. Remove the drain plug – Using the 14-millimeter wrench, turn the drain plug counterclockwise. You will notice that oil starts coming out as soon as the plug loosens. Keep hold of the plug, and do not let it fall into the pan with the oil as it drains out.
  4. Let the oil drain out – The oil will take a few minutes to completely drain out, depending on the level of oil in your car. It is best to let it drain completely and leave the plug out for as long as needed until the oil stops dripping into the pan. Once everything has been drained, replace the washer and the plug and tighten it enough to seal it but not so tight that it will be difficult to remove again.

Replacing the Oil Filter

The oil filter is a small cylinder about the size of a standard soda can. It will be located between the oil drain plug and the engine to the front of the vehicle’s oil pan. Put your oil drain pan under the filter to catch any oil that might have been trapped in there and didn’t drain out through the plug. In some cases, there will still be a lot of oil in that filter, so having the pan under it will be your best bet.

If your oil filter was installed properly the last time it was replaced, you should be able to remove it by hand. Most oil change professionals know the filter should not be completely wrenched down. If the filter is not loose enough to remove with your hand, there are special oil filter removal tools that look like a clamp with a handle. These wrap around the filter and give you more leverage so you can remove it easily.

Let all the excess oil drain from the opening and dispose of the old filter. Then, you can replace it with your brand-new filter. Be sure to tighten it, but only tight enough to remove it by hand the next time you change your oil. Oil filters have a rubber gasket that makes a tight seal without having to wrench the filter down. As long as it seals and you don’t notice any leaks when you put new oil in your Camry, it is tight enough.

Adding New Oil to Your Camry

Pop the hood of the Camry and look for the oil cap. It will most likely be a black cap with a yellow center with a symbol for an oil can on the top, and it is usually located directly over the manifold on the top of the engine. Unscrew the cap and pour in your new oil using the funnel. The Camry takes 4.3 liters of oil, but check your owner’s manual to make sure you are putting in the right amount.

Checking Oil Levels and Cleanup

After you have put the new oil in, tighten the cap and get the car back on level ground and off the ramps or jack. Then, start the engine and let it idle for five to seven minutes to warm up. Take it out for a short drive around the block or down the street so all the oil can circulate throughout the car and get to the proper temperature. This usually takes a total of about ten minutes.

Bring the car back to your driveway or garage and pop the hood. Look for your oil dipstick, usually on the engine’s right side. Carefully pull it out, ensuring you do not burn yourself or get too close to anything that has heated up while driving. Wipe off the dipstick and put it back in the holder for a moment before taking it out again and checking the level.

The dipstick will have two small lines that say “FULL” and “LOW.” If the dipstick is wet with oil at the “FULL” line, you have the right amount of oil in the vehicle, and it doesn’t need to be topped up. If it is at the “LOW” line, add a little more oil and drive around the block again before checking it until it is at the “FULL” line. You should also look under the car for leaks and tighten the filter and oil plug if you see one.

To get rid of your pan full of engine oil and the old filter, look for a Household Hazardous Waste facility in your area. They will take your old fluids and filters and dispose of them properly. You want to ensure they are handled responsibly and in the most eco-friendly way possible. After you have disposed of your oil and filter and cleaned everything up, you can take your Camry out, knowing it is good for another 5,000 to 10,000 miles.

My Car Horn Is Not Working: How to Fix It https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/fix-car-horn-not-working/ Fri, 08 Dec 2023 11:41:39 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=27351 Modern vehicles come with all the bells and whistles regarding safety features, but one feature in particular is standard on all vehicles: the horn. A car horn on your steering wheel is a useful tool for alerting other drivers to road dangers or getting another driver’s attention.

Having your car horn in working order is extremely important, which means knowing how to troubleshoot potential issues is something all drivers should be able to handle.

Car Horn Safety 101

Before working on your car horn, taking a few precautionary measures is important to avoid getting hurt. First and foremost, take the time to unplug your car battery so that no electricity is running to the steering wheel.

The horn button uses electricity to function, which is why this step is so important. You should also refer to your owner’s manual to ensure there are no special items to handle before beginning the dismantling.

On top of this, as with other repairs, ensure you have the proper equipment you need. Safety goggles and gloves should suffice for personal protection, but be sure you also have screwdrivers and other necessary tools at the ready. Finally, be certain that your vehicle is in a safe location to have work performed on it where the sensitive parts that will be exposed won’t be contaminated.

The Initial Troubleshooting Process

The first step in fixing your car horn is to troubleshoot the problem affecting the component. This means opening up the wheel and associated parts to try to identify what is going wrong with the horn. Firstly, take a look at the electronic connectors to the horn to inspect for corrosion, as this can lead to a bad horn. Assuming corrosion isn’t the root cause, remove your steering wheel cover to see if there is a problem with your horn button itself.

Before going further into your troubleshooting, refer to your owner’s manual to locate the fuse box that connects to your horn. Once you have found this box, inspect for a blown fuse that could be the cause of a car horn not working.

This horn fuse being blown will result in a lost connection to the horn and could be why no sound occurs when the button is pushed. Assuming none of the above appears to be the cause for why your horn isn’t working, you’ll need to dive a little deeper into the reason.

Diving Deeper into Your Horn

With all of the surface-level troubleshooting out of the way, it’s time to look for more specific reasons why your horn may not work. Generally, the following are the most common causes of a faulty horn:

  • The horn relay
  • The actual horn unit
  • The clock spring

For those unfamiliar with what a horn relay does, the relay is an electromagnetically powered device that converts the signal of the horn button being pushed into sound. The horn relay is typically inside your car’s fuse box, and the telltale sign of a bad relay is a clicking sound from under the hood when the horn button is pushed.

Alternatively, the actual horn unit is exposed to the elements as you drive daily, and this debris can quickly build up. A quick way to test whether the unit is damaged is to use your key fob to activate the horn. Assuming it works when you click the key, you know the problem is elsewhere.

Finally, another major reason the horn may not be working on your car is if the clock spring is damaged. This simple yet important part stabilizes the electrical connection in your wheel when it is turned so that you can still honk the horn even if your wheel is at an angle. The easiest way to tell if the clock spring has an issue is if the horn only works when your wheel is facing straight or if your horn sound is weaker during turns.

When to Seek Professional Help

The fact of the matter is, any repair to your horn beyond replacing a fuse or adjusting the wiring tends to be best left to the professionals. The airbag and other crucial components, which are sensitive and should not be tampered with, are stored within your wheel. Attempting to DIY a broken car horn can easily lead to additional issues with the electrical system, battery terminal, and more if you are not careful.

Ultimately, if you are not confident in your ability to fix the car horn, leave it to the professionals in a repair shop. While the cost may be a nuisance, repairing other issues that resulted from you trying to fix the horn could be far more.

Regardless of whether you choose to fix the horn yourself or use the services of a professional, remember that while the car horn isn’t necessary to your vehicle’s ability to drive, it is an extremely important part that is legally required to have so do not delay in getting it fixed.

Warranty Considerations to Keep in Mind

A faulty car horn is the perfect example of an unexpected repair that can lead to a surprising repair cost. While it may seem relatively simple to fix, a car horn can cost as much as $200 on average to repair. Having an effective extended warranty can take away this cost, but it can also take away the costs associated with other electrical repairs.

Extended warranties offer financial protection against repair costs when the cause of that repair being necessary is a covered mechanical breakdown. Many warranty contracts offer coverage for a vehicle’s electrical systems, and whether a horn is included in that depends on the terms of the contract. Generally, if it is covered, smaller components such as the horn switch, relay, electrical contact, horn wire, and more will be covered.

Protect Your Vehicle with Endurance

Any issues with a vehicle can quickly give you a headache due to the time it takes to repair and the cost associated with the fix. Fortunately, an effective extended warranty (more accurately called a vehicle service contract or VSC) can take away concerns regarding repair costs by covering that expense. The customizable VSCs offered by Endurance provide contract holders with a slew of coverage ranging from basic stated coverage to near bumper-to-bumper coverage.

Regardless of the type of warranty contract you choose, major components such as the engine, transmission, and air conditioning are covered. In addition to this, each extended warranty contract comes with Elite Benefits, which offer bonus perks such as 24/7 roadside assistance, up to $1,000 in total loss protection, key fob replacement, and much more.

Key Fob Replacement: A Step-by-Step Guide https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/replace-a-key-fob-step-by-step-guide/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 17:30:43 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=27296 As vehicle technology advances, features become more convenient, and design becomes completely geared toward making things as easy as possible for you. Modern key fobs are an excellent example of the advances that have been made in automotive tech.

What was once a simple key has become a control center for many different functions of your car, including starting, window controls, and even remote parking. When something goes wrong with the key fob, you could find yourself unable to access some of the most important features of your vehicle.

Getting a car key fob replacement is fairly simple, but it will be a different process for almost every manufacturer and car model. There are also a few different ways to get a replacement, some of which will be more expensive than others.

Knowing how to navigate getting a new key fob will help you get your vehicle back in good working order and get you back on the road.

Types of Keys and Key Fobs

Most new cars will have security technology embedded in the key fob that helps prevent theft and break-ins. The most basic form of this tech is a security chip in a standard key. This chip interacts with the car through the lock cylinder and ensures that only the key from the manufacturer will open the door. Sometimes, you will have a standard ignition key with a remote that locks and unlocks the doors. These will be the cheapest types of keys and fobs to replace.

Some modern vehicles have the ability to start the car remotely from the key fob. These vehicles have a push-button start instead of an ignition key; the fob is the control center for that function. You may also have a fob that will allow you to start the vehicle with a button or unlock the door automatically if you have the fob on your person. These types of fobs are going to be a little more expensive and complicated to replace if they break or get lost.

Cost of Replacing a Key Fob

The cost of replacing a key fob will depend on factors like what type of fob it is and the model year of the vehicle. For older vehicles with a simple, less functional fob, you can expect to pay between $100 and $150 to have a new fob programmed for your vehicle. If you have a push-button starter fob for a less than five-year-old vehicle, though, it will usually cost between $200 and $400. These prices are for work done at the dealership, which can be more expensive, but you also have other options that you might be able to take advantage of, and they can save you money on the whole process.

How to Know When You Need a New Key Fob

One of the most obvious signs you need to replace your vehicle’s key fob is a complete lack of functionality. If your fob has stopped working, you will want to replace it as soon as possible, especially if it is a keyless entry or push-button starter fob you need to start or get into your vehicle. Should your push-button starter fob stop working suddenly, you may have to get the vehicle towed to the dealership to have a new one made.

Before you do that, though, check your owner’s manual to see if your fob has a physical key hidden inside it that you can use to drive to the replacement shop or if there is a protocol for starting the vehicle with a dead fob.

If you notice that you need to be closer to your vehicle than you usually do for the fob to work, this is another sure sign that it will need to be replaced or that something is malfunctioning with it. The range of the fob is a good indicator of how well it is functioning, and any change should be addressed.

If you lose your key fob, it is also imperative that you get it replaced right away. The dealer will reprogram the vehicle and get you a new fob so that anyone who finds the old one can’t use it to break into your car.

What to Check Before You Get a New Key Fob

Before you take your vehicle to the dealership for a replacement key fob, try replacing the battery in your old one. Sometimes, objects in purses or bags can press the buttons on the fob, which can quickly drain the battery. Most key fobs use flat watch-style batteries that are easy to find at your local hardware store or auto parts store. A new battery may solve the issue; if it does, you can save yourself a lot of money.

You may also want to try resetting your key fob before you get a full replacement. Your owner’s manual should outline the reset procedure, which may help get your key fob back in working order. It is usually just a series of button pushes that you have to do that will set the fob back to the factory programming. If neither of these options works, you may have to get a new fob made.

Where to Get a New Key Fob

Once you have determined that you need a new key fob, where you decide to get it done will determine how much it costs. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, as well as how old it is, you may not have as many options and will instead have to go straight to the dealership. Knowing your options will allow you to shop around and find the best price.

Dealership

For the most part, the dealership will be the most expensive place to get a new key fob made. While it will usually only take between 15 and 30 minutes to get a new fob programmed, it can cost hundreds of dollars.

If your vehicle is ten years old or newer or was made by a European manufacturer, the dealership may be the only place to get a fob replacement. They will have all the necessary programming tools and software to reprogram the vehicle and get you a new fob so you can get back on the road.

Aftermarket Dealer

You may be able to use an aftermarket key fob for older vehicles or vehicles with less functional key fobs. These can be programmed at an independent shop and take the dealership out of the equation, which can save you quite a bit of money.

Before you decide to go this route, though, be sure to call around and find out whether or not a shop in your area can do the reprogramming. Some automakers, such as Audi, only allow for using dealer-made fobs. This makes their vehicles more secure but can also cost you a lot more for the replacement.

Locksmith

In some cases, you can hire a locksmith to make a new key fob for your vehicle. One of the major upsides of using a locksmith is the fact that they can come to wherever your car is. This not only saves you time on going to the shop or dealership but can also solve the problem of being unable to start or get into the vehicle if you find yourself in that situation.

This is usually one of the least expensive solutions, but it is also fairly limited regarding the vehicles an automotive locksmith can make fobs. Key fob programming equipment is incredibly expensive, and not all locksmiths will have access to the right tools for your particular vehicle, so it is a good idea to call around and see your options.

How to Avoid Frequent Key Fob Replacements

If you have to replace your key fob often, it is a good idea to assess how you use it and what you can do to prevent so many replacements. You should always use the exact type of battery that is recommended by your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Using the wrong kind of battery can deteriorate the electronics inside the fob, which will force you to replace it much sooner than you normally would have to.

Environmental factors and where you store the fob can also affect how long it lasts. High humidity, heat, and water exposure can all cause issues with the fob and may damage it to the point that it has to be replaced. Your key fob can also experience interference from other electronic devices, such as mobile phones, which can cause premature battery drain or wear on the components. Storing your fob in a cool, dry place away from other electronics will be your best bet if you want to make sure it lasts as long as possible.

How to Change the Oil in Your Ford Focus https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/change-the-oil-in-your-ford-focus/ Sat, 28 Oct 2023 10:45:41 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=27021 Ford may have recently decided to discontinue the Focus, but with over two decades since the first iteration was revealed to the world, you can bet plenty of them will be on the road for years to come. If you’re a Ford Focus owner, you’ll want to keep your pride and joy in top running condition for as long as possible, and regular maintenance is the best way to do just that.

Engine oil changes, in particular, are incredibly important and will no doubt be part of your manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. The schedule in Ford Focus user manuals recommends an oil change every 7,500 miles traveled, but before you head to a professional mechanic, you might want to consider having a go yourself. With the right tools and a bit of know-how, almost anyone can carry out a DIY oil change.

Keep reading to find out how to perform a Ford Focus oil change for yourself. Note, however, that you should always consult a certified professional before attempting any vehicle modifications or maintenance tasks.

Gathering the Right Tools and Materials

It’s absolutely crucial that you carry out the job with the right tools and materials. Damage caused by poor workmanship will void any coverage your vehicle might have, so do things by the book to ensure you don’t run into any problems further down the line.

Always double-check your owner’s manual for the specific type and amount of motor oil required, but for most Ford models, you’ll need five quarts of 5W-20 oil. As well as this, you should gather:

  • An oil filter (that will fit your model year)
  • A funnel
  • An oil filter wrench
  • A car jack
  • Wheel chocks
  • A ratchet wrench
  • A drain pan

If you aren’t sure which oil filter will fit in your car, you can also find this information in your owner’s manual.

Creating a Safe Environment

Before you set to work, you should create a safe working environment. Even the most mundane mechanical task has its dangers, so it’s well worth avoiding any potential mishaps. Top safety suggestions include:

Park on level ground.

Jacking up your vehicle when it’s on uneven ground is a disaster waiting to happen. To prevent your car from rolling away while you’re underneath it, make sure to park on level ground and firmly engage your parking brake.

Wait for the engine to cool down.

This goes for any work you might be doing on your vehicle, particularly where motor oil is concerned. The engine can get seriously hot, and the oil within can sometimes reach over 250 degrees Fahrenheit during normal usage. If you’ve driven recently, wait a while until things cool down before you get to work. However, don’t wait too long, as slightly warm oil will be easier to drain.

Wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

Gloves are a must when dealing with vehicle fluids. Oil can cause allergic reactions for some people, but by ensuring none gets on your skin, you don’t have to worry. Goggles may seem excessive, but grab some if you have them—it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Use jack stands.

You should use a jack to raise your car off the ground but don’t rely on it to keep your car elevated. By placing a set of jack stands under your car, you can ensure it stays safely raised while you drain and replace the oil.

Draining the Old Oil

Draining the oil is the first major step, but you’ll need to get your car elevated before you can do that. Use ramps, or jack stands to raise the front of the vehicle, and chock the rear wheels to make sure it can’t go anywhere. Next, pop the hood and locate the oil filler cap. Rotate it by 1/4, turn it counterclockwise, and lift off the valve cover.

Now, you’re ready to start draining the old oil. To do this, locate the oil pan drain plug underneath the car. On most Ford Focus models, this will be a 13mm hex bolt facing towards the car’s rear — but don’t touch it just yet. First, place an oil drain pan underneath to catch the draining oil. This should be more towards the rear of the car, as the oil will come out in a stream.

Loosen the oil pan drain plug with a socket wrench until it comes off completely and the oil is draining out into the pan. While this is happening, make sure to watch out for shiny specks in the draining oil. Any metal flakes could mean there is a serious problem inside your engine.

If it’s been a particularly long time since your last oil change, or if you believe the oil in your car might be contaminated with another liquid, you might want to flush your car completely. You can do this easily by placing a funnel in your oil fill hole and pouring in a quart of fresh oil. Because this oil is effectively wasted, you might want to opt for the cheapest you can find and save the good stuff for when you refill.

Replacing the Oil Filter

Once you’re done draining, wipe off and replace the oil drain plug — making sure not to over-tighten it. Empty out your oil drain pan and move it under the old oil filter to start the filter replacement.

To remove the old oil filter, turn it counterclockwise. If it’s too tight to do so by hand, use your oil filter wrench. Oil will start running down the filter’s sides as you do this. You can either allow it to happen slowly or quickly remove the filter to speed things up. Either way, let the last bits of oil drain into the oil drain pan.

Take your new oil filter and (using gloves) apply a small amount of fresh oil to the rubber gasket. Any oil that gets on your skin should be cleaned immediately to prevent irritation. Finally, wipe off the oil filter mounting spot and install the new filter by rotating it clockwise until you can’t anymore.

Adding the New Oil

With the filter replaced, it’s time to refill with new oil. If you haven’t done so already, place a funnel in the fill hole and pour in five quarts of high-quality 5W-20 oil. When this is done, remove the funnel and replace it with the oil filler cap. Tighten by turning 1/4 clockwise. Use the dipstick to see if the oil is at the right level, and add more if necessary.

Start your car and let it run to check everything’s gone to plan. While it’s running, look underneath for any leaking oil. If you notice oil leaks, try tightening the drain plug again. However, Be careful not to overtighten it, as this can crack the oil pan.

Once you’re sure you’re all done, you can finally close the hood and lower your vehicle back down. As a precaution, you should take the time to check your oil levels over the next few weeks. Driving the car may reveal a leak you might have missed.

Cleanup and Disposal

Engine oil is a hazardous waste product that needs to be properly disposed of, but thankfully, it can be recycled.

Set the old filter in your oil drain pan with the gasket facing down to allow the oil to drain out of it, and leave for 12-24 hours. Then, gather the old oil and filter and take it to a recycling facility.

Most auto parts stores and repair shops will accept oil to be recycled at no charge to you. Some cities and counties also have a service where they will collect used oil and filters from your home. Earth911 is a great resource for finding recycling services near you, or you can also check out the American Petroleum Institute’s Recycle Oil website.

What Happens If You Don’t Change the Oil in Your Ford Focus?

It might be a slightly laborious process, but regularly changing your oil is well worth the effort. Overused oil can corrode your engine and cause it to overheat. If this goes on for too long, your engine could fail, leading to incredibly expensive repairs.

The time and money invested can prevent a lot of stress and inconvenience in the future, so sticking to your regular maintenance schedule is key.

The Best Protection for Any Vehicle

Fall Car Photography: How to Capture the Season’s Beauty with Your Vehicle https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/take-pictures-of-your-vehicle-fall-car-photography/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 15:11:36 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26890 It is no surprise that autumn is a favorite season for car owners all across the United States. With pops of color and long shadows, there is so much beauty to appreciate in the autumn months.

If you are interested in capturing some photographs of your car, fall is one of the best times of year for it. The interesting juxtaposition of organic nature and machinery is a classic look, and you can create some truly stunning visual art with it.

Whether you are thinking about selling your vehicle and want some professional-looking photos or you simply want a few great pictures of your car, fall is a fantastic time to get started in automotive photography. Even if you don’t have a fancy DSLR camera with a telephoto or wide-angle lens, you can still capture some excellent images as long as you are using the right techniques.

With the beautiful backdrop of autumn colors and some basic knowledge of photography, you might be surprised by the results you can get. Knowing some photography tips for capturing the beauty of the season as well as your vehicle will help you make the most of this magical time of year.

1. The Importance of Location

Location is one of the most important components of a great photograph, and this is especially true when trying to capture the elegance of autumn. Scouting out locations can be a lot of fun and allow you to stretch your imagination and see the photograph you want to take in your mind’s eye. Look for locations with the quintessential elements of fall. Things like tree canopies, colorful fall foliage, and crisp leaves can all provide the perfect backdrop for shooting cars in the fall.

You should also consider the lighting in the location you choose. If, for example, the sun comes through the trees at a certain time of day, you may want to capture that in your photographs. Be sure to come back to your locations at different times to see what your options are for lighting. Places like forest roads, driveways with tree canopies, and lakeside spots can all be incredibly beautiful, and if you know when to take advantage of the light, you can enhance them even more.

2. Car Preparation for the Shoot

While you want to be sure that you choose the best background for your car photos, you also want to be certain that your car looks its absolute best. This can be accomplished in several ways, but a good wash, wax, and detailing can work wonders. Giving your vehicle a high-end detailing job that brings out all of its best qualities can translate wonderfully to photographs. A wax will also help it shine in the light and reflect the fall colors in a very pleasing way.

You can also choose accessories to add that compliment the autumn palette. Small touches like an orange window shade or yellow under-lighting can be excellent accent pieces that take your pictures to the next level.

If you don’t want to add any accessories, you can choose a background that works well with the colors your vehicle already has. The general look you are going for will determine the choices you make when it comes to your setting.

3. Composition Techniques

When talking about the art of fall photography, composition should be your top concern. Composition refers to the placement of the subject within the frame of the photograph, and it can make or break your pictures.

The rule of thirds is an important composition consideration, which essentially says that the subject of your photo should be on the left or right side, taking up about a third of the frame while the other two-thirds is taken up by the larger background. Your main subject could be the whole car, but it could also be a certain component, like the wheels, while the rest of the vehicle makes up the other two-thirds. This is where your creativity can really come into play.

You can also choose elements to add to your photograph, such as leaves on the windshield or foliage around the wheelbase. These elements can become the focal point of the photo’s composition, which will help the rest of the car stand out. Things like light reflections in the finish can also add some nice touches to the way the photo is framed. Experiment with different close-up placements within the frame to find the things that are most aesthetically pleasing to you.

4. Playing with Lighting

Lighting conditions are crucial in any photography project, but it is one of the most important parts of car photography. Recognizing how light changes the way your car looks in a picture will help you make the best decisions for what you are going for.

For example, the golden hour is a time of day, usually around sunset or sunrise, when the natural light is going to be very noticeable and usable for your pictures. If you want the light to be a big part of your final product, these are the best times of the day to be out taking photos.

While the long shadows of autumn are a very recognizable part of the season, they may not always be right for your pictures. If you want to avoid these shadows, it is best to use diffused light. Fortunately, overcast skies will automatically diffuse the sunlight. If you live in an area where gray skies are common, take advantage of them when you can to capture the vibrant colors without any shadows getting in the way.

5. Experimenting with Different Angles

Woman photographing landscape standing near the carWhile composition is an essential part of the art of photography, angles are just as important. Knowing what parts of your vehicle you want to focus on and where its stance looks the best can be incredibly helpful. If your car has a low, aggressive stance, capturing it from the front with a 3/4 side angle can be excellent. If it is a larger, off-road truck, though, you may want to shoot it directly from the side to get the full picture of its height.

You can also use angles to showcase certain environmental elements that you want to highlight. For example, shooting the car from the bottom up can show either the gray skies above or the foliage in the trees while blocking out less appealing elements like a parking lot. If you want to show a bed of leaves and use their colors as an accent to the vehicle, shooting from the top down is a great option. Knowing what you want to show the most can be incredibly helpful, and, as always, experimentation can help you find the perfect angle.

6. Depth and Focus

While photographs are a two-dimensional medium, there are things you can do to give them a feeling of depth and reality that can be quite striking. Depth of field is an important element of photography and refers to the focus of the background when compared to the subject in the foreground. How you focus on the subject can create an effect that makes the photograph feel vibrant and alive.

If you want to increase attention on your car, use the focus function of your phone or camera to blur out the background and put it in a softer focus. The bright colors of fall can also help create a more artistic feel for the background and put all of the focus on your vehicle. This blurring of the background, or motion effect, is called the bokeh effect, and it can be a great way to make your photos feel three-dimensional without having to shoot a moving car.

7. Post-Processing Tips

In the digital age, post-processing has become an even more important part of the job when it comes to photography. Using popular post-processing software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop can be a great way to make your pictures pop.

If you don’t have high-end software like that, though, most camera apps will have options for adjusting things like vibrance, contrast, brightness, and more. Experimenting with different settings to find the perfect look for your photos can be a lot of fun and help you take your car pictures to the next level.

In post-processing, you can do things like touch up elements that you want to remove, like spots on the exterior panels or debris on the road. You can also use cropping to frame your photos properly and abide by the rule of thirds, even if you weren’t able to do so when you were out shooting. Adjusting color sliders and camera settings can also help you highlight the areas that you want to pop, draw focus in the photo, and enhance the natural colors of your photo shoot.

8. Showcase and Share

No matter what your intentions were for taking your car pictures, art is meant to be shared. It can be incredibly rewarding to get feedback on your pics and have them be appreciated by someone other than yourself. Fortunately, there are all kinds of ways to showcase your photographs and get them in front of other car photographers. Setting up a portfolio website online is fairly simple and can help you see how you have improved over the years as you take more and more photos.

Instagram is a fantastic social media platform to show your photos to an audience that will appreciate them. Using hashtags and searches, you can engage with other photographers or car enthusiasts and get feedback on your photos in real time. Getting involved in an online community of artists can be a great way to get motivation and learn things that will help you improve your skills in the long run.

How to File a Claim with Your Extended Warranty Provider https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/file-a-claim-with-your-extended-warranty-provider/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 18:36:50 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26616 In the event of a breakdown, having an extended warranty or vehicle service contract watching your back can be a total lifesaver. With some major repairs costing thousands of dollars, by making sure you have a protection plan in place, you can save yourself some serious money (not to mention stress).

But when the worst happens, how do you make a claim? We’ve put together a full breakdown of the Endurance claims process, as well as the processes for our closest competitors: CarShield and CARCHEX. Keep reading for everything you need to know.

Preparing to Make a Claim

So you’ve suffered unexpected component failure, and your used car is at the auto shop. If you have a valid extended warranty or vehicle service contract and the component in question is covered under your plan, your warranty company or provider will foot the bill on your behalf. But there are a few things you need to do before you can make a claim:

Check that your repair coverage is active.

It may seem obvious, but the first step is to make sure that your contract is currently active. While good providers will ensure you’re regularly reminded of expiration/renewal dates, if you don’t keep on top of them, you could be caught out.

Review the terms of your contract.

Your contract has all the info you need on the specific components that are covered by your vehicle protection plan. Double-check those affected features in your list of approved repairs before you attempt to make a claim.

Gather the necessary documents.

Don’t contact your provider empty-handed. Make sure to have your contract number and service records available, as you may need to present both. It’s recommended that you store all relevant documents somewhere in your vehicle so they’re always nearby when you need them.

How to File a Claim with Endurance Warranty Services

Filing a claim with Endurance Warranty couldn’t be simpler. Just follow these steps, and you’ll be back on the road in no time.

1. Prevent further damage.

By using your 24/7 roadside assistance and towing perks, you can get your vehicle to the auto shop pronto—preventing further damage and making the claims process as smooth as possible.

2. Take your vehicle to a licensed repair facility.

Unlike traditional extended warranties that tie you to dealerships miles away, we allow our customers to take their vehicle to the nearest licensed auto shop or ASE Certified mechanic of their choice.

3. Service manager obtains authorization.

Instruct the service manager at the repair facility to contact us for authorization.

4. Authorize tear-down and/or inspection.

You may need to authorize the facility to tear down or inspect your vehicle to find the cause and cost of the repair.

5. Review your warranty coverage.

The service manager will review your Endurance coverage plan with you to ensure the repairs are covered.

6. Pay any applicable deductible.

If your plan includes a deductible, now is the time to pay it.

7. Keep all forms of documentation during this time.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry until things are fully confirmed.

8. Sit back and relax while your car is getting repaired.

You’re all set. You can keep track of your claim’s progress in the handy Endurance Mobile app or give our award-winning customer service team a call at (866) 432-4443 if you ever have any questions.

How to File a Claim with CarShield

Moving on to Carshield, info on their claims process is a little thin on the ground:

1. Call the roadside assistance of your claims administrator.

Unlike Endurance, Carshield is not the direct administrator of their plans. You’ll need to find out who your claims administrator is, as well as the contact details for their roadside assistance service.

2. Head to your dealer or an ASE Certified auto shop.

It’s standard practice for vehicle service contract providers to allow customers to take their vehicle to any licensed auto shop.

3. Authorize tear-down and/or inspection.

Sometimes, the cause and cost of the repair won’t be immediately obvious without further investigation.

4. Give your warranty contract to the service manager.

They’ll contact your claims administrator to seek authorization for the required repairs.

5. Pay any applicable deductible.

Before Carshield releases the funds for the auto shop, you’ll need to pay any applicable deductibles.

How to File a Claim with CARCHEX

Another major vehicle service contract provider, the CARCHEX claims process is as follows:

1. Prevent further damage.

Use the roadside assistance number in your contract to get your vehicle to safety ASAP.

2. Take your vehicle to a licensed repair shop.

Like Endurance, CARCHEX also allows customers to take their vehicle to any licensed repair facility.

3. Authorize tear-down and/or inspection.

To get to the root of the problem, the mechanic may need you to authorize tear-down or inspection.

4. Find out your claims administrator’s contact details.

CARCHEX is not the direct administrator of their plans, so you’ll need to figure out which claims administrator you’re with and what their contact details are.

5. Have the repair facility contact the claims department for approval.

Then, it’s over to the repair facility to acquire authorization for your claim.

6. Pick up your vehicle and pay any applicable deductible.

You won’t be able to collect your vehicle before any applicable deductibles are settled in full.

Comparing the Claims Processes

The three claims processes are broadly similar, but there are some key differences that really set them apart. To compare them better, let’s put them side by side:

Endurance CarShield CARCHEX
Detailed claim process with information readily available ✔ ✔
Take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility ✔ ✔ ✔
Direct administrator of most plans ✔
Award-winning customer service team ✔
Track claims on a handy smartphone app ✔

What to Do After a Claim Approval

Once your provider has given the mechanic the green light, this is usually when you’ll need to pay any applicable deductible. If you aren’t sure whether you have a deductible, or you know you have one but don’t quite know how much it is, take a look at your contract and keep the number in mind to prevent any nasty surprises.

With that settled, your provider can take one of two routes. The simplest for you as the customer is for the auto shop to send the bill to your provider, who will then pay them directly. This is how we do things at Endurance. The second method is for you to foot the bill and submit the relevant paperwork to your provider for reimbursement. This route is obviously more cumbersome and means you’re out of pocket for as long as it takes to process.

When covered repairs are complete, all that’s left is to do is pick up your vehicle.

Common Reasons for Claim Denials and How to Avoid Them

Unfortunately, every once in a while, warranty providers are unable to authorize a claim. While we can’t speak to the reasons that other car warranty companies deny claims, we can assure you that Endurance would never do so without a very valid reason.

The most common reason for a claim being denied is because a contract has been misinterpreted. For example, some contract holders may only have powertrain coverage but believe that this warranty covers all components within their vehicle. When they come to claim for a component that isn’t part of their plan, this will be denied.

The best way to avoid this is to read and re-read your contract, familiarize yourself with what’s covered, and upgrade your coverage ahead of time if you’d like something more comprehensive. Despite contract misunderstandings, we’re committed to helping with repair bills or collaborating on future payment arrangements.

Pre-existing conditions are another reason that vehicle service contract claims might be denied. Unless it’s fresh off the production line, most cars will have something wrong with them when a warranty is purchased. However, any repairs resulting from these issues will not be covered by your plan.

Whether they were unknown or purposely not mentioned at the point of the warranty purchase, your mechanic will be able to determine if they were pre-existing or not. For this reason, we always suggest that you purchase a contract sooner rather than later.

Preventing Future Claims

While they’re always a recommended investment, the best kind of vehicle service contract is one you don’t have to use. Even when a repair is covered by your provider, breaking down and going through the claims process can be a stressful ordeal, so it’s worth avoiding it completely if you can.

The best way to prolong the life of your vehicle’s components and prevent future claims is to stay on top of regular maintenance. This includes basic everyday tasks like keeping tires at the right PSI and ensuring fluids are topped up, as well as oil changes and other jobs you’d most likely need to visit a mechanic for.

Almost every vehicle service contract provider stipulates that your manufacturer’s recommended maintenance plan must be followed to the letter as a matter of course, so it’s something you should be doing whatever the case in order to keep your coverage valid.

Quality Mechanical Breakdown Coverage from the Country’s Top Provider

Across the web, experts agree that Endurance is America’s top choice for extended auto protection. But don’t just take their word for it! Check out our 5-star reviews from thousands of happy customers.

Not only do we offer high-quality coverage for peace of mind, but we also throw in some of the best benefits in the business. Every Endurance plan comes with 24/7 roadside assistance, trip-interruption costs, and replacement travel reimbursement as standard.

How to Change the Oil in Your Hyundai Accent https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/change-oil-in-hyundai-accent/ Sun, 27 Aug 2023 12:28:33 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26450 Keeping a Hyundai Accent running for the foreseeable future is about more than simply being a safe driver on the road. While keeping your eyes peeled and attention on the road at all times will help to prevent an accident, it won’t do anything to stop mechanical breakdowns. This is why taking care of preventative maintenance tasks on a regular basis throughout the year is so important.

Some preventative maintenance tasks need the professional hand of a repair shop, such as rotating tires or inspecting certain specific parts, whereas others can be handled by a vehicle owner. One of the most important preventative items on your maintenance schedule, which can be handled by any average person, is an oil change.

Learn the importance of regular oil changes and how to complete one yourself on your Hyundai Accent so that you can help to ensure a smooth driving experience for years.

The Importance of Regular Oil Changes

The importance of regular oil changes truly cannot be overstated. Understanding this importance starts with understanding the role oil plays in a vehicle. In short, if an engine is the heart of a vehicle, oil is the blood running through the vehicle. The most important aspect of oil is that it acts as a lubricant in the engine, helping metal parts move without causing too much friction.

Additionally, oil helps to prevent a buildup of sludge in the engine. As it passes through the engine utilizing its passages, it pulls gunk off of the walls of those passages. Contrary to popular belief, however, the reason oil needs to be replaced isn’t that it evaporates. While it does evaporate eventually, albeit, at a much slower pace than water, the main reason it needs to be replaced is that it becomes a less efficient lubricant the older it is. This can result in greater friction between metal components in the engine, which can damage the entire system, leading to thousands of dollars in auto repairs.

Leading Indicators for When to Change Oil

Considering the importance of oil outlined above, the last thing any Hyundai Accent owner wants is for their trusty vehicle to fail them on the road. This is why all drivers should take the time to understand the leading indicators that their oil is going bad. Each of the following should be cause for checking your current oil levels:

The Oil Change Light Turns On

Most modern vehicles come with an oil change light that alerts a driver when the oil level gets low or if there is a problem with the oil. For the majority of cars, this light turning on simply means that it’s time to replace the oil. However, should you notice this light turning on in conjunction with mechanical issues with the car, it’s possible a more serious oil issue is occurring.

The Engine Makes Odd Knocking Noises

As oil becomes less efficient at its job when it ages, the friction that comes between parts can cause your engine to start making weird knocking noises as you drive. While there are other potential causes for this, it may mean that a Hyundai Accent oil change is in order.

The Vehicle Has Exceeded the Recommended Replacement Time

After the last time you took the time to change your oil, it’s likely that a sticker was placed in your vehicle, which indicated when the next oil change was due. In the past, every 3,000-5,000 miles was the general rule of thumb, though engines have become more efficient, and now every 5,000-7,500 miles can be considered a guideline for some vehicles.

The Exhaust in Your Vehicle Becomes Smoky

Similar to a knocking noise appearing in your Hyundai Accent engine, another key sign that it may be time to change the oil in your car is if the exhaust seemingly becomes smoky for no reason. This can also be caused by putting the wrong oil type in a car, however, so keep this in mind when changing oil.

Preparing for an Oil Change 101: Everything You Need

Before diving into the oil change on your Hyundai Accent, you will need to prepare your vehicle so that it is ready to go. To do so, grab the following necessary tools:

  • Wrench to remove the drain plug
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pain
  • Latex gloves
  • Funnel
  • Oil
  • Oil filter

There shouldn’t be any more tools needed than the above for a conventional oil change, but check your owner’s manual to be sure your Hyundai Accent doesn’t require anything specific.

Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Your Hyundai Accent Oil

Changing oil in a Hyundai Accent is easier than most people assume at first glance. Here are the quick and easy steps to follow for your oil change:

  1. Check the type of oil and amount of oil you need by consulting the owner’s manual of your vehicle and then going to the store or ordering online
  2. Gather all of the supplies listed above and any extras that you may need
  3. Your engine and oil should be warm when changed, but not hot. Allow your vehicle to cool down after it is running, but don’t let it go stone cold.
  4. Locate the oil filter and drain plug under the car, which will likely be a bottom-mount screw-on filter
  5. Position your drain pan underneath the drain plug, offset by a couple of inches, as the oil will come out at an angle
  6. Take the oil filler cap off under the hood of the car
  7. Put on gloves and remove the oil drain plug with a wrench, then finish unscrewing by hand
  8. Reinstall the drain plug after the oil has drained completely
  9. Top off your vehicle with the right amount of fresh oil and screw back on the oil filler cap
  10. Check the oil level using the dipstick

How to Dispose of Used Oil

Avoid throwing out used oil at all costs once you have completed the oil change on your Hyundai Accent. It has been illegal to dispose of oil in sewers, drainage systems, surface or ground waters, water courses, or in the trash for many years in most states, and if you are caught, you can be fined heavily or placed under arrest.

Instead, research accredited oil recycling facilities in your area that can safely dispose of the waste on your behalf. There shouldn’t be a cost associated with dropping your used oil off, which means there is absolutely no reason not to visit a site near you.

Protect Your Vehicle with Endurance Auto Warranty

While taking care of regular oil changes is an excellent way to help ensure there is a lower risk of breaking down on the road, it doesn’t take away the total possibility. This is why being prepared for the unknown by investing in an extended warranty contract is so important. These contracts, paid for on a monthly or yearly basis, offer financial protection when a covered mechanical breakdown occurs on your vehicle, allowing it to be fixed for cheap so that you can get back on the road quicker.

Endurance Auto Warranty offers customizable extended warranty contracts for drivers to consider. Those seeking basic protection that is designed for aged vehicles can make use of the Secure Plus plan, which covers common parts such as the engine and transmission, whereas those seeking more expansive protection can consider the Superior plan, which offers expansive coverage for intricate components such as the fuel system. Additionally, each Endurance package comes with Elite Benefits for a small activation fee, which offers bonus perks such as 24/7 roadside assistance, up to $1,000 in total loss protection, up to $500 in collision coverage, and much more.

Hyundai Accent FAQs

How much oil does a Hyundai Accent take?

Depending on the specific Hyundai Accent model a person has, the amount of engine oil that can be stored will differ. However, it is likely that the capacity for your motor oil will fall in the range of 3.5 quarts to 4.0 quarts. All drivers should refer to their owner’s manual for confirmation.

Where is the oil pan on a Hyundai Accent?

Understanding how to change oil can be difficult without understanding the entirety of the oil storage system. On the Hyundai Accent, the oil pan is located on the bottom of the engine, specifically being bolted to the engine block.

How often should I get the oil changed in my Hyundai Accent?

The Hyundai Accent follows the standard modern recommendation for oil changes in vehicles, meaning a person should change their oil every 3,000-5,000 miles on average. When in doubt, refer to the sticker that was put on your windshield at the time of your last oil change.

What oil do I put in a Hyundai Accent?

The majority of Hyundai Accent models will take a synthetic blend of oil rather than full synthetic motor oil. However, it’s best to refer to your local auto shop to buy the oil in person rather than trusting your gut and making the purchase online.

Choosing the Right Family Cars: Safety, Space, and Comfort https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/choose-the-right-family-car/ Mon, 21 Aug 2023 20:03:16 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26415 While reliability is always a factor when choosing a vehicle, many more considerations are involved when kids are in the picture. Safety, space, and comfort must also be part of the equation. With this in mind, we’ll dive into what families need to prioritize when evaluating what’s next for the driveway.

In addition to exploring crash testing, passenger and cargo accommodations, and convenience factors, we’ve included a list of the best family cars.

Importance of Safety Features

Safeguarding their offspring is every parent’s top priority, and sadly automobile accidents are a leading cause of death among children and adolescents, says the New England Journal of Medicine. It’s a sobering statistic emphasizing the importance of choosing safe family transportation.

Keeping everyone protected while on the road begins with a rigid steel cage that protects the passenger compartment and crumple zones that absorb crash energy before it reaches the vehicle’s occupants. Airbags provide further cushioning during an accident by safeguarding the head and torso.

Meanwhile, anti-lock brakes (ABS) use computer-aided pulsing to prevent the wheels from locking up during emergency braking. This technology minimizes skidding and enhances driver control. A vehicle stability system ties into ABS technology and a network of sensors to prevent a spinout or rollover.

At a minimum, you’ll want a vehicle with all these protective features. And with few exceptions, cars from the 21st century incorporate this safety equipment. Some automobiles from the 1990s may have ABS and airbags, but these systems are not as advanced as newer vehicles.

If your budget allows for a new car or one built in the last few years, you need to be aware of next-generation safety technology that’s standard or optional in most new or newer family vehicles. Called advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), these technologies advise drivers of potentially hazardous situations, activate the brakes to prevent or minimize a collision and provide driver support for things like maintaining a proper lane position.

Manufacturers have their own names for these systems (such as Ford CoPilot360 or Honda Sensing), but they all pretty much do the same things. Generic terms for the individual safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, and lane-centering assistance. There are many more, and sometimes car makers use their own terms, which can be confusing.

A coalition of AAA, Consumer Reports, J.D. Power, and other groups have come together to encourage automakers to standardize the names for these technologies. Learning about this effort is worthwhile, especially if you haven’t been car shopping in the last five to ten years.

ADAS technologies are arguably the most significant automotive safety advancements since the seat belt and the airbag. If the wallet permits, you want a family vehicle with these features.

Understanding Safety Ratings

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 5.5 million police-report car accidents happened in the U.S. in 2022. That works to a traffic collision every six seconds. So, these incidents still happen despite accident-avoidance technology.

These occurrences reinforce the need for family vehicles with top safety ratings. Two testing organizations in the U.S. rank automobiles for safety performance. NHTSA, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, provides star ratings (1 to 5) for how a vehicle performs in front and side impacts and rollovers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), funded by a consortium of insurance companies, provides Good, Acceptable, Marginal, or Poor ratings for several tests, including small frontal overlap, side impact, roof strength, and headlight effectiveness. IIHS also assesses ADAS technologies and judges seatbelts and child car seat attachments. The group assigns its Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ designations to the best-performing vehicles.

Keeping an eye on top safety performers is essential to shopping for the best family transportation. We’ve included safety testing highlights in our list of top family cars (below).

The Need for Space

While younger children don’t need adult-size space in a car, their accompanying gear certainly does. Strollers, car seats, and diaper bags are bulky space hogs. And while older kids don’t require the same equipment, they do have their own set of needs. We’re talking about abundant legroom and plenty of space to avoid “they’re touching me” complaints.

The station wagons of the 20th century have mostly given way to crossovers, SUVs, and minivans. Crossovers are vehicles that combine some SUV traits (boxy styling and a rear door) with car-like driving qualities. The Toyota Highlander and Honda CR-V are two examples.

SUVs use body-on-frame construction (like a pickup truck) to provide extra off-road and towing capability. This often translates into more interior space. A Chevrolet Tahoe is just one of several SUVs on the market.

For some, minivans carry the stigma that a family has sacrificed style for practicality. But others swear by the versatility and spaciousness that can only come from a minivan. It wasn’t too long ago that most mainstream automakers offered a minivan, but now there are only four on the market, including the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

Passenger Accommodations

Determining adequate passenger space for a family comes down to how many rows of seats you’ll need. For most families, two rows are sufficient.  However, some clans need extra room for children, their friends, or extended family. Two-row transportation usually means seating for five.

However, passenger capacity increases significantly with the addition of a third row. Depending on the car and its seating configuration, a three-row vehicle can handle six to nine people (seven to eight is common; some versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and GMC Yukon can transport up to nine people). However, it’s vital to mention that not all third rows are created equal. Some third rows are only suitable for children, while others offer generous accommodations. It’s safe to assume that the longer the vehicle, the greater the third-row legroom.

Cargo Space

Figuring out how many seats you need is only part of the recipe for finding the ideal family car. There’s also a need to bring along everyone’s stuff. Often, this involves trading passenger capability for cargo space.

Most crossovers, SUVs, and minivans offer flexible seating for just such a purpose. Split seatbacks in the second and third rows can be folded to adapt to abundant cargo. And some minivans allow seats to be removed completely. Importantly, always inspect the cargo space for any vehicle under consideration. This is especially important because the area behind the third row can be limited in some cars.

Comfort and Convenience

Family portrait planning roadtrip

Comfort and convenience features make life easier, whether you’re headed to the grocery store or on a week-long road trip. Let’s review the equipment that can keep parents and kids happy.

Basic comfort starts with cabin temperature. Base models will have a single-zone climate control system with manual settings, while some vehicles come with dual-zone automatic climate control for the front seats. Explore what’s available for keeping the second and third-row passengers comfortable. You may find a tri-zone system or separate climate controls for the rear positions. At a minimum, there should be HVAC vents for the back rows.

Seating is the next on the list. We’ll leave the debate about fabric, leatherette, or leather upholstery to the individual, but there are other considerations. Heated seats keep passengers toasty during chilly weather; they’re popular for the front seats and available in the second row with some models. Meanwhile, ventilated front seats keep the driver and copilot cool in some family vehicles. Integrated sunshades on the second-row doors can also help regulate the temperature.

A sunroof helps bring light into the cabin, with a standard unit offering extra daylight to the front row, while a panoramic sunroof brings airiness to the back. Depending on the car, rear sunroofs may just provide a fixed glass panel or the ability to open for improved circulation.

Comfort for the whole family is also enhanced by in-car entertainment. It wasn’t too long ago that this meant a built-in display screen with a DVD player for the back rows. But, these cumbersome and expensive units have been replaced by personal tablets. The only thing required is USB charging ports in the back rows. Access to a Wi-Fi hotspot doesn’t hurt, either.

Cupholders may not be the focus of family vehicle buyers, but it’s a big deal for automakers. It’s common to find three-row cars with at least a dozen cupholders. For instance, the Subaru Ascent has 19. Of course, these aren’t just for holding beverages. Cupholders are excellent cubbies for phones, snacks, and toys.

Let’s finish our conversation about amenities with a quick look at clever features with parents in mind. A power liftgate and power-sliding minivan doors come in handy when your arms are full with packages or you have little ones in tow. Remote start makes the cabin comfortable before anyone steps inside. And more and more manufacturers are adding cabin intercom systems, so “Are we there yet?” questions don’t have to turn into shouting matches. Even ambient interior lighting can help set the mood.

Operating Costs to Consider

The costs of keeping a family vehicle on the road can be as impactful as the purchase price. These considerations start with fuel economy, with the trade-off for extra space being decent but not stellar gas mileage.  Most three-row family cars deliver 20-25 MPG. The standout is the Toyota Sienna, which only comes as a hybrid (if you’re buying new). This minivan is rated for an impressive 36 MPG. We’ve included fuel economy information with our list of top family cars (below).

But there’s more to owning a vehicle than trips to the gas station. Maintenance needs to be accounted for. New car shoppers will appreciate that some brands include scheduled servicing. Honda, Toyota, and Volkswagen come with the first two years of basic maintenance, while Hyundai and Kia stretch this out to three years (these programs have mileage restrictions).

However, you’re on your own with second-hand vehicles. This means paying for oil changes, tire rotations, and other basic services. In this scenario, consider the Advantage extended warranty plan from Endurance. It covers up to $3,500 in maintenance services.

Also, remember that every new or used car will eventually require replacement tires and brakes. While shopping, review the maintenance schedules for the respective vehicles under consideration. Checking sites like RepairPal can help identify what vehicles are more reliable, lessening the worry about future repairs.

Review of Top Family Cars

The market for family vehicles is crowded. To simplify shopping, we’ve highlighted ten of our favorites among the three-row category and included some of the highlights for each model. Although larger SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition can be helpful, we’ve focused on minivans and larger crossovers. These are presented in alphabetical order.

We’re starting with a summary chart for easy comparisons. This information is based on the 2023 model year with the base engine. Unless mentioned otherwise, all vehicles have two-wheel-drive configurations (mostly front-wheel drive; the Ford Explorer is rear-wheel drive). The Toyota Sienna is the only hybrid on the list, although the Chrysler Pacifica is available as a plug-in hybrid.

Make/Model Fuel Economy (combined MPG) NHTSA Overall Rating

Volkswagen Atlas 23 5 n/a 21.0 96.8 155.0

Chevrolet Traverse

The Chevy Traverse serves big families well, with seating for up to eight and generous legroom. The RS appearance package adds sporty flair, while interior ambient lighting creates a welcoming space. Chevy’s Teen Driver Mode promotes safe habits, and a rear seat reminder warns about forgotten occupants.

Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica offers ample interior space, and top trim levels provide luxuries like quilted leather upholstery.  As a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the Pacifica offers 32 miles of gasless driving, making it excellent for local errands. Meanwhile, Stow ‘N Go seating maximizes cargo space convenience.

Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer delivers three-row versatility befitting its legacy as one of the original family-friendly SUVs. The current (sixth-generation) edition maintains SUV-like qualities (such as rear-wheel drive) for excellent towing capability while incorporating crossover features for comfortable driving.

Honda Odyssey

Also adept at maximizing interior flexibility, the Honda Odyssey fits up to eight passengers or an impressive 158 cubic feet of cargo volume when the back rows are folded (more than any other vehicle on our list). This minivan is built to handle parenting and cargo-hauling duties with ease.

Hyundai Palisade

The well-rounded Hyundai Palisade delivers safety and upscale comfort for growing families. A long feature list includes available power-folding third-row seats, multi-zone climate control, and heated/ventilated seats. The Palisade easily earns its family-first status.

Kia Carnival

Kia cleverly masks the Carnival’s minivan DNA. But these roots help enhance the Carnival’s substantial cargo space with sliding and removable second-row seats and a fold-flat third row. An upscale interior and available dual sunroofs create a welcoming cabin for every family member.

Mazda CX-9

The Mazda CX-9 is ideal for families that only need to use the third row for smaller passengers occasionally. At the same time, an upscale cabin and meticulous craftsmanship convey an interior that’s more common to luxury vehicles.

Subaru Ascent

Subaru instills its safety traditions into the family-sized Ascent. Standard all-wheel drive lends stability in all weather, and a suite of advanced driver aids adds extra confidence. Large windows and slim roof pillars help outward visibility and give the cabin an airy feeling.

Toyota Sienna

Multiple seating configurations, cavernous cargo space, and clever storage solutions make the Toyota Sienna a well-suited family vehicle. A hybrid-only powertrain ensures top fuel economy ratings (36 MPG), and available all-wheel drive steals the thunder from crossovers and SUVs.

Volkswagen Atlas

Young families will appreciate the Volkswagen Atlas’s cavernous second row for car seats and a third row that is still suitable for adults. An available digital cockpit display will satisfy tech-oriented drivers, and a suite of the latest safety features brings extra peace of mind.

7 Tips for Test Driving and Purchasing a Vehicle

Saleswoman helping the male customer to choose a new family car

Selecting the perfect family car requires careful evaluation. Your research should include a well-planned test drive. Bring along the car seats, strollers, and family; everything and everyone that might usually join you for a ride. If you don’t have a child (like if one is on the way), borrow them from a relative or friend!

Here’s a test-drive checklist to review:

  1. Conduct a Walk Around: Visually inspect the exterior to confirm the car is in good condition before hitting the road.
  2. Review Vehicle Equipment: Learn what features are included in the car you’re checking out. Make sure it has all the equipment you want. This is a good time to ask the seller any questions about how the different features work.
  3. Set the Controls: Position the seat and mirrors for a comfortable and safe driving position.
  4. Plan a Route: Don’t settle for a quick trip around the block. Plan a test drive route that includes local streets, back roads, and highways to ensure the vehicle behaves like you want it to.
  5. Start the Car: Start the car (or restart it) to listen for unusual noises and check for warning lights.
  6. Pay Attention While Driving: With the radio off, listen for unusual noises (like rattles and vibrations), especially during cornering, braking, or accelerating. When safe to do so, sharply press the accelerator to check responsiveness. Likewise, stomp on the brakes (look for traffic in the rear first) to check the stopping power. Does the car steer straight or pull left or right?
  7. Perform a Post-Drive Assessment: Gather your observations immediately after the test drive. It may be useful to write down your thoughts. Did the car meet your expectations? What is comfortable to drive? Can you see yourself owning this car for five or ten years?

Smart Negotiating Hacks

We could write an entire article about how to get a good deal on a car, but we’ll leave you with these five tips to always consider before signing the paperwork.

  1. Shop Around: Work with multiple dealers to get competitive quotes and leverage competition. Don’t hesitate to shop outside our local area if the numbers aren’t to your liking.
  2. Check Online Prices: Go online to research fair pricing so you know what a reasonable offer looks like. A dive into web forums may even reveal real-world transaction information.
  3. Look for Available Rebates and Incentives: Manufacturers are stingier now with promotional offers, but special offers do exist if you look hard enough.
  4. Prequalify for Financing: Contact your bank or credit union or use an online lender to get pre-qualified for a car loan. This will put you in a stronger negotiating position with the seller.
  5. Negotiate Final Price, Not Monthly Payment: Concentrate negotiations on the bottom line price instead of the monthly payment. There’s less chance for the dealer to hide what you’re really paying.

Family Cars and the Confidence of Endurance

There’s a lot to think about in searching for a well-matched family vehicle, with space, safety, and comfort being just some of the considerations. However, one thing you shouldn’t have to worry about is what to do when a breakdown occurs. An Endurance extended warranty helps cover the bills for surprise repairs.

Endurance provides a range of auto protection plans. Select powertrain coverage for the engine, transmission, and drive axles — the most affordable option. Or, choose a vehicle service contract that offers bumper-to-bumper protection with few exclusions — this plan is similar to a new car warranty. There are in-between options that balance premiums with coverage.

Every Endurance extended warranty comes with 24/7 roadside assistance (with towing coverage and lockout assistance), rental car reimbursement, trip-interruption support, and flexible terms. A 30-day money-back guarantee typically provides a full refund if the cancellation request is made during the first month of coverage. And, Endurance plan holders can also choose any ASE Certified mechanic or repair facility for covered repairs.

Customers can add one year of Elite Benefits. These extra features are valued at up to $2,000 and cover tire repairs and replacements, collision repair discounts, key fob replacement, and other valuable services. A small enrollment fee activates this additional protection.

How to Buy a Luxury Car on a Budget https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/buy-a-luxury-car-on-a-budget/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 09:53:08 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26340 For many car enthusiasts around the world, finally saving up enough money to purchase a luxury car is a huge goal in life. Whether that new car is manufactured by BMW, Lexus, Audi, or another high-end luxury brand, all drivers should have a chance at securing their dream ride. This is why learning how to build a budget for a luxury vehicle, along with how to select the best model, is important for anyone considering car shopping.

How to Define a Budget for a Car Purchase

The first and most important step to take when considering a new vehicle that falls into the luxury category is the budget you have. Affordable luxury cars shouldn’t break the bank so long as a person is prepared well in advance with a budget that allows them to meet the financial obligation of luxury vehicle ownership. To that end, use the following four points to define your luxury vehicle budget:

Start by setting your max spend amount for a down payment.

Naturally, the first part of building a budget for a car purchase is determining how much you can afford for a down payment. Financial experts recommend a down payment of 20% of the total purchase value when making a new car purchase, and this recommendation doesn’t change when a car falls under the luxury category. However, considering the fact that the average luxury car has a sale value tens of thousands of dollars higher than a standard car, a person needs to outline the max down payment they can afford.

Factor in the ongoing monthly payments for the car.

The down payment for a car is only the beginning of the cost of that vehicle. After the maximum down payment you can afford has been worked into your budget, determine the maximum monthly payment you can also afford. To do this, add your monthly expenses and income to see if you will still comfortably be in the green after a multi-hundred dollar car payment.

Balance your total existing debt against the new potential amount.

Taking out an auto loan for even the cheapest luxury cars will significantly increase the debt on a person’s personal balance sheet. Take into account any existing debt, such as a mortgage or line of credit, to determine whether or not an auto loan will put you over the edge of affordable debt.

Don’t forget to account for the total cost of ownership.

Finally, never forget that the cost of a vehicle is not just the down payment and the ongoing monthly payments. The average yearly maintenance cost for vehicles can be hundreds to thousands of dollars on top of what you are already paying, so factor this potentially higher amount into your budget when evaluating what you can afford.

Benefits of Buying Used

While many people considering luxury SUVs or luxury sedans often believe they need to purchase a new vehicle to meet their dream, opting for a used car is extremely smart. There are a number of prominent benefits to purchasing used, with the most notable including:

  • Generally, lower insurance rates, which is particularly helpful for higher-end sports cars such as Porsche
  • A wider selection of potential vehicles to consider as compared to only what is on the dealership lot
  • The upfront cost of purchasing the vehicle will be far lower than buying it outright off the manufacturing line

What You Need to Know About Luxury Car Depreciation

The depreciation with vehicles is notoriously known for being intense, but it’s even more so with luxury cars. In fact, the first five years of luxury vehicle ownership will see an average 40-50% drop in value from the original selling amount. This intense depreciation is why buying a used luxury car is so smart financially.

5 Tips for Settling on the Right Brand and Model

Car driving on a sunset roadOnce a person has really begun their savings journey towards getting a luxury vehicle, they can narrow down the type of car they want. The following tips can help ensure that happens:

1. Assess your current needs for a vehicle.

While the first type of luxury car that may pop into a person’s head is likely to be a sports car, they aren’t good choices for those who need more space or those with a family. In this situation, a person should consider a larger luxury car that is more of an SUV style. Alternatively, consider how you will be driving the vehicle and where you will be driving it so that you can narrow down your needs better.

2. Look up safety ratings for different brands.

Another great way to determine which brand and model of vehicle is right for you is to look up the safety ratings for the different vehicles. Check user reviews so you can read about first-hand ownership stories with that vehicle.

3. Weigh the costs of ownership for a specific brand.

As mentioned, there are more costs to owning a vehicle than just the purchase price. Consider the ongoing maintenance costs, as well as potential repair costs, that you may need to pay, which can drive your total price toward the roof. With that said, a person can mitigate some of these extra expenses by investing in an extended warranty contract.

4. Set up a test drive ahead of purchase.

All those looking to purchase a luxury vehicle should test drive the car they are considering before actually making a purchase. While a Mercedes-Benz, as an example, may look flashy from the outside, there could be specific factors that arise when driving it that you dislike.

5. Compare different vehicle models under the same brand.

While one specific model offered by a brand may not catch your eye, it’s entirely possible that you are dead set on the brand itself. In this situation, consider looking at similar models to the ones you don’t want so that you can find a great alternative.

Typical Financing Options for a Luxury Car

Financing a car purchase is extremely common, but there are two primary options to consider depending on your personal financial situation:

Direct Lending

Direct lending involves reaching out to a third-party lender to take out an auto loan. This is done by researching different lenders until you find one who offers historically good rates. You then apply for a loan and indicate that it will be used for an auto purchase. Once you have been approved for the loan, the funds will be released, and you can go shopping for the vehicle.

Dealership Financing

The more common alternative to direct lending is dealership financing, which involves taking out a loan directly from the auto dealership. The dealership structures the loan and sets it up, then they sell the loan to a financial institution that takes it over from there.

Negotiation Tips for Luxury Vehicle Prices

While car buying in the past was more of an art, and prices could be haggled, purchasing a new car from the dealership doesn’t leave much room for negotiation. However, if you are considering purchasing a sporty, luxurious car from a third party, there are a few general negotiation tips that can help adjust the price tag:

  • Do research ahead of time to find a fair value for that vehicle
  • Use cash as a negotiation tool by showing a willingness to pay right then and there
  • Always try to negotiate on the total price rather than the monthly payments
  • Make a reasonable, not insulting, offer on a vehicle
  • Have a pre-purchase inspection completed, either by yourself or with the help of a professional

The Importance of a Pre-Purchase Inspection

No driver should make a purchase without inspecting the vehicle they are going to purchase with their own eyes. While dealerships will be honest with you, it’s entirely possible that the person doing the walk around on the vehicle missed something. Inspect the wheels, under the car, the outside of the car, and the interior components such as the wheel, the gadgets, and everything else inside.

Endurance Warranty to Protect Your Vehicle

Once a driver has the vehicle of their dreams, the last thing they want is to see their vehicle have a serious breakdown that results in an expensive repair cost. Mechanical breakdowns are unfortunately quite common and can occur on vehicles of all ages, which is why having the right auto protection plan in place is so important, especially when it comes to luxury vehicles.

In particular, Endurance Warranty offers customizable coverage plans that offer everything from basic to the most comprehensive. The Supreme for Highline Vehicles package is most applicable to luxury vehicles, offering the closest to manufacturer-level coverage a person can get, with parts such as high-tech components, the engine, the transmission, or other serious components all covered.

Additionally, each new Endurance contract comes with Elite Benefits, for a small activation fee, that offers bonus perks such as 24/7 roadside assistance, reimbursements for up to two tires per year due to road hazards, up to $500 in collision coverage, and more.

How to Choose the Right Car Sunshade to Maximize Interior Protection and Comfort https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/choose-the-right-car-sunshade-for-interior-protection/ Thu, 20 Jul 2023 13:03:14 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26201 When it comes to customizing and protecting your vehicle, there are a multitude of strategies to take advantage of. However, one often overlooked method that can be particularly helpful to those in sunnier states around the country is investing in a car sunshade.

Learn everything you need to know about the benefits of sunshades, along with tips for choosing the right sunshade for your vehicle.

Understanding the 3 Primary Benefits of Sunshades

For those unfamiliar, a sunshade, or car window shade, is a material that is placed in a car under the windshield to block the sun’s rays from coming in. While this may not seem necessary, a windshield sunshade has three major benefits to keep in mind:

1. Protection against UV rays and heat damage.

The car’s interior can be heavily damaged by the constant battering of the UV rays from the sun. This can lead to serious heat damage within the vehicle, not to mention making it an uncomfortable place to sit in when you get into your vehicle. These harmful UV rays can burn the skin and damage materials in your car.

2. Preserving the integrity of the vehicle interior.

The last thing any driver wants is to see their high-quality vehicle damaged over time by the sun’s rays coming in through the windshield. Of the many downsides to not using sun protection in your car, the loss of integrity on interior components is the worst. They can fade heavily over time and even degrade if your car consistently sits in a particularly warm area for years.

3. Enhancing comfort by reducing heat.

Finally, a sunshade makes a car cooler for the driver when they get in, meaning it is more comfortable. On top of this, a driver will not need to blast the air conditioning the minute they get into the car in order to cool it off.

Key Considerations for Choosing a Sunshade

For those considering getting a window sun shade, there are a number of different key considerations to keep in mind. The most notable of these include:

The Windshield Size and Fit

While it may not be the first thought that pops into mind, remember that a sun shield or sun visor will come in different shapes and sizes. Take the time to measure your own front windshield and rear windows to determine what size and fit are required for your car.

Material Types and Durability

The best car sunshades don’t come in one single material or durability. Therefore, consider different materials that may be more effective at blocking out UVA or UVB rays depending on the area of the country you are in.

The Ease of Installation and Storage

With different sizes and different materials come varying levels of difficulty in regard to installation. Keep this in mind, as few drivers would like to spend 20 minutes setting up a rigid sunshade every day. To avoid this and keep your vehicle cool, choose a flexible fabric that has easy installation and can be stored quickly.

Additional Features and Functionality

The best windshield sunshade will do more than just stop the sunlight from entering your vehicle. Certain window shades will come with additional features, such as automatic cooling technology or quick pack features. Consider these when determining which sunshade is best for you.

Material Options to Consider for Car Sunshades

As mentioned, the choice of material that a driver makes can make a major difference in the effectiveness of their sunshade. Below are a few key considerations to keep at the top of mind:

  • Reflective or metallic sunshades: Reflective sunshades avoid a buildup of heat by redirecting the UV rays rather than absorbing the majority of them. On the other hand, metallic sunshades absorb the heat instead. While they can block heat more effectively in the short term, they allow more heat to be retained in the vehicle in the long run.
  • Fabric or mesh sunshades: Fabric sunshades are more common than mesh sunshades and tend to be cheaper, whereas mesh sunshades are more complex to manufacture. Despite this higher cost, mesh sun shades allow a breeze to get through, which can help keep your car cool while also stopping the heat.
  • Custom-fit vs. universal sunshades: Finally, you will need to choose between a universal sunshade that you force to fit your windshield or paying more for a custom-made version that is a perfect fit for your car.

4 Different Types of Car Sunshades

As mentioned earlier, there are a variety of types of sunshades that are suitable for all cars ranging from tiny models all the way up to SUVs. The following four types of car sunshades are the most prominent in the industry:

1. Folding or Accordion-Style Sunshades

This first type of sunshade is likely the most commonly seen on the road. It folds inwards from the sides like an accordion when it is ready to be put away, which is particularly helpful for storage as it condenses into a rectangle. However, given that the folds are exposed when blocking the sun, it may protrude into your vehicle or allow some heat to stay between the cracks.

2. Roll-Up or Retractable Sunshades

The second type of sunshade to consider is a roll-up or retractable sunshade. This sun shade rolls up instead of folds, which means it can be laid flat against the windshield without having any creases. The retractable version requires mounting a small piece at the top, which can then be pulled down to cover the window.

3. Suction Cup or Cling Sunshades

The suction cup variant of the sunshade sticks to your window itself and then is pulled off when it is time for removal. From a storage standpoint, it is the worst, but from a sun-clocking standpoint, it is one of the best, as it completely blocks light when it is custom-made.

4. Magnetic Sunshades

Magnetic sunshades take suction cup sunshades a step further by actually permanently securing the shade to your windows using magnets. This type of shade tends not to obstruct a driver’s view, which means this doesn’t need to be a concern for drivers.

Proper Placement and Usage of Car Sunshades 101

After purchasing your first sunshade, it’s time to learn how to maximize the car windshield sunshade you have in your possession. The following three tips can help you figure out how to maximize the efficacy of your tool:

Correct positioning for maximum effectiveness.

If you have not ordered a custom sunshade for your car, you will need to figure out the best placement on your windshield to reduce the amount of sunlight coming in. Try to line up the corners of the sunshade with your window as best as possible, but in a worst-case scenario simply ensure that the majority of the driver and passenger cabin is covered.

Tips for securely attaching sunshades.

Second, if you don’t have a magnetic or suction sunshade, you will have an issue securing your sunshade. To get around this, consider using tape that will not damage your vehicle or perhaps latching the sunshade to your rearview mirror to hold it in place.

Proper storage and care of sunshades.

Finally, if the integrity of your sunshade is compromised, then the integrity of your vehicle will also be compromised. Always store your sunshade in a dark place when it is not in use to avoid overexposure to the sun. Aim to clean off any dust or dirt that may accumulate over time so that you keep your sunshade looking fresh and presentable.

Additional Considerations for Enhanced Protection

Acquiring a sunshade for your front windshield is only the beginning of your battle against the sun. There are three primary additional considerations to consider when it comes to enhancing your protection:

Sunshades for side windows and rear windshield.

When purchasing a sunshade for your front windshield, don’t forget that this will only stop the sun from the front. To maximize your protection, consider investing in a window shade for the side windows and the rear windshield as well to keep things cool.

Sunshades with UV protection or insulation properties.

Certain sunshades on sites such as Amazon will either be basic or come with advanced features such as UV protection that goes further than simply blocking the sun. Evaluate your personal budget to determine if this is something you need.

Compatibility with vehicle features.

Do keep in mind that a sunshade will impede your vehicle in certain ways, such as potentially blocking your rearview mirror or messing with the vehicle sensors, if applicable. Rather than risking this, research the sunshade you are considering to be certain that it is compatible with your vehicle.

The Importance of Reading Customer Reviews and Ratings

When you are going through and deciding which sunshade is right for your vehicle, it’s important to lean on the experience of others. The past reviews of various sunshades should be the starting point for considering which shade is right for you. However, don’t just look at the number of stars a person has given to the brand or product, rather, read their reviews to see what their specific likes and dislikes were.

Take note of any key points, such as if a sunshade isn’t truly foldable or if it isn’t effective at blocking the sun. Look into the reviews to see if they mention how much heat is retained in the vehicle. Factors such as these can make or break your purchase decision.

Highly Recommended Car Sunshade Brands

There are a wide variety of sunshade brands for a driver to consider purchasing from, but the following names are among the most popular to consider:

  • Kinder Fluff
  • EcoNour
  • McButy
  • Sailead
  • Ontell Brella

The Best Online Resources for Researching and Comparing Sunshades

Knowing where to start when trying to find the right sunshade can be difficult, but the best way to start is to simply visit a large website such as Amazon. Type in something as simple as “car sunshade” to see what search results come up, and then begin researching different brands to see who has the highest reviews and why. Always read reviews to be sure it isn’t bots recommending the product.

Utilize Endurance to Protect Your Vehicle

While a sunshade provides excellent protection for your vehicle, maintaining its integrity requires much more long-term maintenance. However, maintenance costs can quickly pile up when paying out-of-pocket. This is why investing in a strong extended warranty contract, such as those offered by Endurance Warranty, can be an excellent idea.

With three primary contracts ranging from competitive and stated protection with the Secure Plus plan all the way up to near bumper-to-bumper protection with the Supreme coverage plan, there is something for everyone. When choosing a tire storage location, it’s best to pick a cool and dry environment that is not exposed to extreme temperature changes or direct sunlight. The storage area should be clean, well-ventilated, and away from any electrical devices. Additionally, tires should be organized and stacked to evenly distribute the weight to prevent deformation and contact with sharp objects.

Protecting tires from environmental factors is crucial in ensuring their longevity. Tires should be stored away from any chemicals or ozone-producing objects that can cause damage to the rubber, such as fuel, solvents, or even electric motors. Storage bags or covers can also provide additional protection from dust, dirt, and moisture.

Proper tire storage practices are crucial to maintaining tire durability and maximizing performance. Ensuring tires are always clean, dry, and protected from environmental factors is the key to preventing damage and deterioration of your tires. Following these tire storage best practices can help extend the life of your tires beyond their expected lifespan, making them worth the investment.

8 Tire Storage Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s:

  1. Clean your tires thoroughly before storage. – Dirt, grime, and other debris that accumulate on your tires can eventually lead to cracks and degradation. Clean tire surfaces with a gentle cleaning solution and a soft-bristled brush, and remove any stubborn grime.
  2. Store tires in a dry and cool place. – Heat and moisture can cause tire damage and promote bacteria growth on the surface. Therefore, storing your tires in a cool and dry environment, away from direct sunlight, is essential to ensure that they remain in optimal condition.
  3. Store tires on racks or tire bags. – The best way to avoid structural damage to your tires is to store them on a rack or in a tire bag. This method will help prevent pressure points and other damage that can be caused by improper storage.
  4. Check tire pressure regularly. – Due to changes in temperature, tire pressure can fluctuate, which can sometimes lead to tire distortion. Therefore, periodically check your tire’s PSI levels and adjust them to the recommended levels to help prolong their lifespan.

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t store tires outside. – Exposure to sunlight, rain, or snow can cause considerable damage to your tires in a short time. Store your tires in a secluded area or in a garage where they won’t be exposed to the elements.
  2. Don’t stack tires on top of each other. – Placing multiple tires on top of each other can cause the bottom tires to become compressed and distorted, which can lead to structural damage.
  3. Don’t store tires near heat sources. – The excessive heat generated by fireplaces, heaters, or engines can cause your tires to degrade and even catch fire.
  4. Don’t use chemicals for tire storage. – Petroleum-based chemicals like oil or gasoline can degrade the rubber materials in your tire, so avoid using them when storing your tires.

Spare Tire Maintenance

Spare tire maintenance is a crucial aspect of vehicle safety that is often overlooked by motorists. A spare tire, also known as a “donut” or “emergency tire,” is an extra tire kept in a vehicle’s trunk, undercarriage, or mounted on the rear. It is meant to be used in case of a tire blowout or flat, but many car owners don’t give much thought to its upkeep.

To extend the life of your spare tire, it is important to check it regularly for wear and tear. Spare tires are often made of cheaper materials and may have a shorter lifespan than your regular tires. You should inspect the tire for cracks, bulges, or punctures and check its tread depth.

Experts recommend replacing your spare tire every six to eight years to prevent any complications during a roadside emergency. To ensure your safety in such situations, it is essential that your spare tire is properly inflated. A tire gauge should be used to check the air pressure on a regular basis.

In addition, the placement of the spare tire is also a critical factor in vehicle safety. It is recommended that the spare tire should be located in a secure and easily accessible spot in your vehicle. This will prevent damage and make it easier for you to change your tire in the event of a flat.

The placement of the spare tire is also a critical factor in vehicle safety. It is recommended that the spare tire should be located in a secure and easily accessible spot in your vehicle. This will not only prevent damage but also make it easier for you to change your tire in the event of a flat.

Tire Repair and Warranty Considerations

Tire repair is a significant aspect of vehicle maintenance, particularly for those seeking to extend the lifespan of their tires and reduce the overall cost of vehicle ownership. However, when considering potential tire repair options, it is vital to understand the limitations on tire repair coverage under extended warranties. Many extended warranties offer limited coverage for tire repair, and it is important to carefully read the terms and conditions before making any decisions.

Proper procedures for tire repair are also critical to ensure maximum safety and longevity of the tire. Although various tire repair methods exist, the plug-and-patch method is the most widely accepted technique. This involves inserting a plug into the punctured area while also sealing the inner lining with a patch. It is important to follow proper repair procedures to prevent further damage to the tire, avoid compromising tire safety, and ensure compliance with manufacturer warranty requirements.

Manufacturers provide specific guidelines for tire repairs, and it is essential to adhere to them to ensure proper function and safety. Failure to follow manufacturer guidelines can void the tire warranty and put the driver and other road users at risk. Finally, any improper tire repairs or modifications can have significant implications on the tire warranty, and it is important to seek professional advice before undertaking any repairs or modifications to avoid voiding the tire warranty and future expenses.

Extended Warranty Coverage for Tires

Knowing the extent of tire coverage in extended warranties is crucial in making informed purchase decisions. Generally, tire coverage in extended warranties varies based on the provider. Some warranties cover tire replacement if they are damaged, while others offer protection against wear and tear. With an extended warranty from Endurance, you can choose Elite Benefits, including great benefits such as 24/7 roadside assistance and tire replacement/repair. These are great benefits to have to protect you against tire blowouts and flats while on the road.

Maintenance Tips for Extended Tire Lifespan

Maintaining your vehicle’s tires is essential to ensure optimal performance and safety on the road. Regular tire inspections are crucial to identify signs of wear and damage. Experts recommend inspecting your tires once a month and before long-distance trips. Proper tire rotation and alignment practices help distribute the tread wear evenly, extending your tire’s lifespan. Maintaining correct tire pressure and load capacity also promote tire longevity and fuel efficiency. It’s crucial to check your tire’s pressure using a tire gauge regularly. Over-inflated and under-inflated tires can cause uneven tread wear. Lastly, considering tire replacements and upgrades at the appropriate time can save you money in the long run, prevent accidents, and provide better performance, especially in extreme weather conditions.

How to Safeguard Your Car’s Dashboard and Interior from Sun Exposure https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/protect-cars-dashboard-and-interior-from-sun/ Fri, 14 Jul 2023 10:37:38 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26154 From picnics to vacations, the summer months bring many enjoyable things. But for a car owner, the season’s intense sunshine invites damage to their vehicle’s dashboard and interior. The fading, cracking, and other deterioration are unsightly and can significantly impact resale value.

To avoid these issues, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of what you can do to protect your vehicle from harmful UV rays and the summer heat.

Understanding the Risks of Sun Exposure to a Car’s Interior

The sun’s potent rays can have a damaging effect on a car’s dashboard and interior. UV rays break down the chemical bonds that comprise the materials used in automotive interiors. This decay leads to fading and cracking over time. Upholstery is especially vulnerable to this type of deterioration. In addition, excessive heat causes the dashboard and other interior components to warp.

It all adds up to a need to preserve your car’s interior. Fortunately, there are several steps that a car owner can take to protect their vehicle.

Use Window Shades and Sunshades

The simplest way to protect a car’s dashboard and interior from the sun is to use window shades and sunshades. These essential devices require little installation and effectively block the sun from entering the vehicle. Another benefit is a cooler interior and less strain on the air conditioning.

At a minimum, a windshield sunshade is a summer must-have. Placement takes a few seconds, it folds when not in use, and the cost is modest. Short of never parking in the sun, a windshield sunshade is the best way to protect the dashboard.

Window shades are also an effective way to protect the cabin. They are equally as inexpensive and easy to use. Be sure to find sunshades that adequately cover all the window glass for maximum coverage.

Park in Shaded Areas

Another method to protect a car’s interior is by parking in a shaded area. This might be in a garage, under trees, or against a building. You may have to walk a little further, but the trade-off is reduced sun exposure for your car. Plus, the car’s paint and clear coat finish take less of a beating.

If there’s no shady spot to take advantage of, try parking your car so the sun hits the back or side of the vehicle. At a minimum, this will limit the amount of direct sunlight that contacts the dashboard. This alternative approach is even more helpful with window shades.

Invest in a Quality Car Cover

Yes, a car cover requires extra effort, but the advantages are significant. The interior is protected from UV radiation, and the car’s exterior is safeguarded against the bleaching sun and the elements. A car cover is especially ideal for vehicles left outdoors for extended periods.

When selecting a car cover, look for high-quality materials with UV protection and breathability. This second trait allows moisture and heat to escape, preventing mold and mildew growth. In addition, the car cover should be fitted for your car. A loose cover can comprise protection.

Clean and Condition the Dashboard Regularly

The first step to keeping a dashboard in good shape is regular maintenance, which means keeping the surface free of dust, dirt, and grime. Otherwise, these contaminants can scratch the dashboard and create a starting point for deterioration.

Begin with a soft cloth (like a microfiber cloth) and a mild cleaning solution, and finish with a high-quality conditioner made specifically for dashboard use. These products help preserve chemical bonds and prevent the surface from drying out.

But just don’t wait for when the dashboard needs a complete cleaning. Get in the habit of wiping off mild dust build-up every few weeks. Use a specially treated cloth or wand.

Apply UV-Protective Film or Tinting

Protective films have advanced significantly in recent decades and are an effective technique for minimizing sun damage to a car dashboard and other interior components. Typically made from polyester, these coverings are used in interior overlays (protective films) and car window tinting.

Interior protective films are applied on top of the dashboard, over wood or metal trim, and on other hard surfaces that can suffer from the intense sun.

Tinted windows block a significant amount of sun’s rays from entering the cabin and help keep the car cool. The darkness and placement of window tinting are regulated in most states, so be sure to check local laws before proceeding in this direction.

Applying protective films and window tinting requires skill; hiring a professional for this work will ensure proper installation.

Consider a Dashboard Mat and Other Protective Options

If covering a dashboard with a protective film isn’t appealing, consider a dashboard mat instead. This fabric or vinyl cover sits atop the dashboard and provides effective UV protection. A dashboard mat is custom-designed to fit each car make and model, so vents aren’t blocked.

Other worthwhile items that protect a car interior include seat covers to preserve the upholstery (including leather seats) and full-surface coverings for the carpet (ensure carpet covers don’t interfere with the safe use of the driver pedals).

Use Interior Protectants and Conditioners

Blocking the sun’s damaging rays includes the use of specialized protectants and conditions. These solutions are formulated for use in car interiors and help inhibit the fading and cracking that come from UV exposure. At the same time, a good conditioner can restore a dashboard, the steering wheel, and other surfaces from sun-related damage.

Pick a protectant and conditioner formulated for dashboards and hard interior surfaces; leather conditioners and upholstery treatments are best reserved for car seats.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance

The trick to successful car ownership is catching little problems before they become major ones. This approach includes regularly looking for signs of sun damage on the dashboard and in the cabin. If fading, cracking, warping, and other problems are detected, early intervention can prevent these issues from worsening.

But the best way to avoid these troubles in the first place is through ongoing maintenance. These steps include using covers, adding protective film and window tinting, and applying protectants and conditioners.

Final Words: How to Safeguard Your Car’s Dashboard and Interior from Sun Exposure

The blazing summer sun doesn’t have to mean damaging conditions for your vehicle’s dashboard and interior. Being observant, conducting regular maintenance, and using quality protective products can reduce sun exposure risks. These steps keep your car looking its best and help preserve its value.

Endurance: Protection for the Whole Car

Taking care of your vehicle’s dashboard and interior is only part of being a car owner. Protecting your ride against breakdowns and surprise repair bills is also necessary while on the road. For many, this happens thanks to an Endurance auto protection plan (sometimes called an extended warranty).

Endurance has options ranging from powertrain coverage (for the engine and transmission) to plans similar to a new car warranty. 7 Strategies for Maintaining Optimal Windshield Wiper Performance https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/7-ways-to-maintain-windshield-wiper-performance/ Fri, 07 Jul 2023 14:00:51 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=26114 A small rainstorm can be a breath of fresh air in the heat of the summer, but if your windshield wipers aren’t in good condition, it can cause a dangerous driving experience.

Since windshield wipers are not at the top of car owners’ minds until they need to use them, it is very easy to let them become rotted, old, and inefficient. Here we’ll give you six strategies for maintaining driving visibility and optimal windshield wiper performance.

The Role of Windshield Wipers in Safe Driving

Operational windshield wipers are crucial to safe driving, particularly during inclement weather. Clear visibility is essential for navigating roads safely, but rain, snow, and other forms of precipitation can obstruct a driver’s view. Worn-out or malfunctioning wipers can exacerbate the situation and significantly impede driver safety.

For instance, they can leave streaks, smudges, or scratches on a windshield, creating glare or reducing a driver’s ability to see. Regular maintenance and care, such as checking and changing wiper blades and ensuring proper fluid levels, is essential to ensure the reliability and effectiveness of this vital safety feature on any vehicle.

7 Practical Maintenance Tips for Windshield Wipers

1. Clean Your Wiper Blades Regularly

One effective way to keep your wiper blades in top condition is to clean them regularly. This can be done using a simple solution of warm water and mild soap. Gently wipe the blades with a soft cloth or sponge, not damaging the rubber material or the wiper arm. You can also use a specialized wiper cleaner or preservative to protect the rubber from drying out, cracking, and deteriorating. Your wiper blades should be checked and cleaned at least once every six months to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

2. Inspect Wiper Blades for Wear and Tear

Wipers that are worn or torn can cause visibility issues and lead to hazardous conditions on the road. To properly maintain your windshield wiper blades, it is essential to inspect them regularly for signs of wear and tear. This includes checking for cracks, splits, or missing chunks on the rubber blade. Additionally, the wiper arms should be checked for corrosion or other signs of damage.

Replacing wiper blades every 6-12 months or sooner is recommended if signs of wear and tear are present. By regularly inspecting and replacing wiper blades, you can ensure optimal visibility and safety while driving.

3. Clean and Lubricate Wiper Arms and Pivot Points

While replacing worn blades is necessary, maintaining and lubricating the wiper arms and pivot points can extend the lifespan of the blades, improving visibility during heavy rain or snowfall. Cleaning these areas with a damp cloth and removing debris can prevent dirt, grime, and rust from building up and causing damage. Additionally, lubricating the pivot points with a silicone-based lubricant can prevent squeaking and ensure smooth operation.

4. Use the Right Windshield Wiper Fluid

The right windshield wiper fluid is essential for maintaining clarity and road safety. Windshield wiper fluid not only helps to remove dirt and grime from the windshield but also prevents streaking and smearing that can impede visibility. By using a quality wiper fluid, you can avoid damage to wiper blades and the windshield itself.

When selecting a windshield wiper fluid, it’s essential to consider the weather conditions you will be driving in. Different weather conditions require different fluid formulas. For instance, a winter-specific wiper fluid is formulated to prevent freezing during low temperatures. Summer-specific wiper fluids are formulated to withstand high heat without evaporating too quickly. Using the wrong fluid can cause the liquid to freeze, leave a greasy residue, or not clean the windshield effectively.

Before filling up the windshield wiper fluid reservoir, read the product label to know the recommended usage, mixing proportions, and storage recommendations. Remove the cap and use a funnel to avoid spills and overfilling when filling the reservoir. We recommend regularly checking the wiper fluid level and topping it up as necessary to keep the windshield clean and maintain visibility. In summary, choosing the proper windshield wiper fluid is not only a matter of safety but will also help you prolong the life of your wipers and keep your windshield clear and free from damage.

5. Ensure Proper Wiper Arm Tension

Ensuring proper wiper arm tension is paramount to the longevity and effectiveness of your windshield wipers. Proper tension ensures that the windshield wiper blades make adequate contact with your windshield, thereby removing debris and achieving the maximum clarity necessary for safe driving. Over time, the tension in wiper arms can become compromised, reducing functionality and potential damage to your windshield.

Adjusting the tension of wiper arms is a seemingly simple task but requires a delicate balance to correctly match the pressure of the blades to the windshield. Seeking professional assistance is always recommended to avoid causing further damage to your windshield, especially if you are unsure how to adjust the tension correctly. Ensuring proper wiper arm tension is essential in achieving optimal visibility and ensuring a safe driving experience.

6. Maximize Wiper Performance and Longevity

To maximize wiper performance and longevity, storing them properly during extreme weather conditions is essential. This means parking your vehicle indoors or covering it with a tarp during heavy snow and rain. Additionally, be careful when cleaning wiper blades, as harsh cleaning agents can damage them. Instead, use gentle soap and water to wipe them down. Lastly, prevent ice and snow buildup on wipers by clearing off your windshield or using an ice scraper in the winter months before operating them. These simple steps can significantly extend the life of your wipers and ensure clear visibility in inclement weather.

7. The Importance of Timely Wiper Replacement

Regularly changing your wiper blades may seem like a small and insignificant task in the grand scheme of vehicle maintenance. Still, it is actually a vitally important aspect of safe driving. Wiper blades are exposed to extreme temperatures, harsh elements, and heavy usage, so they naturally wear down over time, even more so in extreme weather conditions such as intense heat or high-powered rain. When your wiper blades become worn, cracked, or brittle, they can cause streaks, smears, and even become loose, resulting in an obstructed view of the road and putting you and other drivers at risk.

The importance of timely wiper replacement cannot be overstated. Research has shown that over 20% of all motor vehicle accidents are weather-related, and many of these accidents can be attributed to poor visibility due to worn-out wiper blades. Replacing your wiper blades at the appropriate frequency ensures you have a clean and clear view of the road, regardless of the weather conditions. This can be particularly important when visibility is limited during rainy, snowy, or icy conditions.

Experts typically recommend replacing your wiper blades every 6 to 12 months, depending on your usage level and exposure. By staying on top of this small maintenance task, you can keep yourself and your passengers safe, avoid accidents and ensure that your windshield wipers are always working at their best.

The Benefits of Regularly Detailing Your Car and 10 Steps to Do It Yourself https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/benefits-of-detailing-your-car-10-diy-steps/ Mon, 19 Jun 2023 09:47:46 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=25876 One of the best ways to retain the value of your vehicle over time beyond ensuring all parts are operating normally is to keep your car clean and sharp. The best way to go about this task is to detail your vehicle, although few people take the time to handle this task.

Car detailing is an important job beyond simply getting a car wash, so all vehicle owners should learn how to perform detailing services on their vehicles.

What Does Detailing a Car Mean?

Most people are familiar with what washing a car means, but some drivers may not have heard about detailing. While a car wash is often an automated process that blasts your vehicle with water in order to remove the buildup of dirt, dust, and other contaminants on the exterior, car detailing services are done by hand.

Car detailing services are far more labor-intensive and focus on targeting specific stains, damage, grime, and more in order to clean and restore a vehicle’s paint job to a near like-new condition.

4 Key Benefits of Regularly Detailing Your Car

Given that car detailing services are done by hand, the process takes a longer time compared to a standard car wash. Due to this, fewer people handle this important task, even if they are using professional services instead of doing it themselves. However, there are a few key benefits to car detailing that make the effort more than worth it:

1. Improved appearance and curb appeal.

One of the biggest benefits of detailing your car is that the overall appearance will be improved, which also improves the curb appeal of your vehicle. While this is a benefit from a purely aesthetic perspective, it will also mean your car will be running for a longer period of time.

2. Protection against environmental damage and wear and tear.

Over years of driving, your vehicle sustains a natural amount of damage that comes from rocks jumping off the road, the buildup of grime, and general wear and tear. By detailing a vehicle on a regular basis, these issues can be resolved before they compound and become worse.

3. Increased resale value.

For those who picture themselves selling their vehicle someday, regular detailing can actually improve the resale value of a vehicle. Not only will the exterior of the car look more presentable, but the removal of any irritants to the car’s paint, scratches, or general grime will also bolster the resale price.

4. Improved overall driving experience.

At the end of the day, nobody wants to be driving around in a vehicle that they are embarrassed to be driving in. By taking care of detailing on a regular basis, you can improve your driving experience by being proud of the vehicle you are driving. On top of this, the mere fact that your vehicle is more protected from environmental damage means you reduce the risk of a breakdown happening while you are on the road.

How to Detail Your Own Car Yourself

Another major deterrent for those considering detailing their vehicle is the fact that the cost of professional car detailing services is quite high. After all, with the cost of basic dealing services reaching $300, a person can’t be blamed for being hesitant to get the job done. However, a person can detail a car’s exterior and a car’s interior all by themselves, so long as they understand the steps and materials needed:

10 Steps Involved with Detailing

While detailing your car can seem like a daunting task at first, there are a few high-level steps that should be followed can simplify the process:

  1. Begin by cleaning your car’s wheels with a general cleaner and brush
  2. Apply a pre-cleaner to your vehicle that works on breaking down tougher grime
  3. Use snow foam to blow away any stubborn dirt that remains
  4. Rinse the vehicle first with car shampoo, followed by a water wash
  5. Apply a decontaminating substance
  6. Dry the vehicle off
  7. Polish the clear coat of the vehicle
  8. Glaze, wax, and seal your vehicle
  9. Apply dressing to your tires and their trims
  10. Apply a solid cleaner

Materials and Tools Needed for Detailing and Hand Washing

Each of the above steps requires a certain amount of tools and materials in your garage in order to complete the detailing job. The most important of these items include:

  • At least two buckets
  • A car wash hand mitt
  • A variety of applicators and brushes
  • A foam cannon
  • A light source to inspect the exterior of your vehicle
  • A vacuum and blower for the interior
  • Plastic razor blades for buffing out the problem
  • Microfiber cloths and other drying tools
  • A rolling work seat

While there are more tools and materials that a person can use depending on the extent of the detailing they wish to perform, the above are just some of the basics.

Tips and Tricks as You Begin to Detail Your Vehicle

Once you have all the materials and tools you need to begin detailing your vehicle, there are a number of tips and tricks that can be used to speed up the process more successfully:

  • Remove loose items from your vehicle before you begin
  • Start from the top so that liquid and cleaning solution don’t drip down to already cleaned areas of the car
  • Slide your seats forward to ensure you aren’t missing dirt that is under the seats
  • Install covers to the seats in your car to protect the upholstery from cleaning chemicals
  • Dry your glass surfaces in two directions to avoid stains
  • Remove swirl stains before finishing the process

Detailing the Exterior vs Interior of a Vehicle: What You Need to Know

Never forget that a proper vehicle detailing job requires handling both the interior and exterior of your vehicle. When tackling a DIY interior detailing and exterior detailing job, there are a few differences. The exterior is where you will be applying the majority of chemicals and window cleaning solutions. However, on the interior, your focus will be on stain removal, vacuuming, and general garbage cleanup.

There are certain products and wipes that can be used to restore the interior dashboard area of a vehicle, but it’s important not to overload this area with chemicals. Instead, treat interior surfaces with care by simply clearing out crevices, wiping dust away, picking up trash, and taking care of damage from UV rays. You can also consider steam cleaning your interior seats if it will not damage the fabric.

How to Bundle Your Vehicle Service Contract with Other Coverage https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/bundle-your-vehicle-service-contract-with-other-coverage/ Mon, 12 Jun 2023 10:07:06 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=25824 Every time you get in your car, you know how important it is to drive safely and do everything you can to protect yourself and others. On top of driving safely, you also want to ensure your car is covered and protected. Fender benders, poor road conditions, and unexpected repairs are part of car ownership, no matter how conscientious you are. Making sure that your vehicle is protected in the event of an incident can help give you the confidence you need whenever you get behind the wheel.

An extended warranty, more accurately called a vehicle service contract (or VSC), is one of the best ways to protect yourself from high repair costs. There are other things that can cost you money when you are on the road, though, such as accidents and breakdowns, and you want to be certain that you are covered. Bundling a VSC with other types of automobile coverage is a great way to give yourself ultimate protection and feel safe whenever you are on the road.

Bundling is when you combine coverage types to cover yourself for every eventuality. Some providers offer different types of coverage, and putting them together with home insurance or life insurance could cover any gaps in your protection contracts. Knowing some of the benefits of bundling and what options are available to you will allow you to drive with certainty that you have a protection plan on your side, no matter what happens.

Types of Coverage to Bundle

On top of a VSC, there are different types of coverage that you can get for your vehicle. When purchasing your VSC, there may be several options to choose from in the form of additional perks and benefits. These include things like collision coverage, rental car assistance, and maintenance plans. In addition to these perks and benefits, adding different coverage can help give you comprehensive protection. Car insurance, GAP insurance, and roadside assistance can all provide coverage for different situations and help you get the repairs or help you need when something goes wrong with your vehicle.

Before you decide which additional plans to include with your overall protection, you should know what each of them has to offer. With a good understanding of how these plans work, you can make the right choice for your particular car and driving needs.

Auto Insurance

Auto insurance, through companies such as Geico or AllState, is a legal requirement for drivers in most states and is essential if you are going to be driving on public roads. There are many different kinds of auto insurance, including liability insurance, uninsured motorist coverage, and personal injury protection.

While many states only require you to have liability insurance in case you are involved in an accident and damage someone else’s vehicle, having a more comprehensive contract combined with a VSC ensures that you won’t be on the hook for repairs if your vehicle is damaged on the road. In some cases, you can also get insurance that will protect you from things like storms and falling trees, which may be a good idea in certain parts of the country.

GAP Insurance

When you buy a new car with an auto loan, you do not actually own the car. Both you, as the contract holder, and the bank, will be on the title, which means that if something happens to the vehicle while you are still paying it off, you will still owe the bank for the loan. GAP insurance, which stands for “guaranteed asset protection,” covers the difference between what the vehicle was worth at the time of an accident and what you still owe on it.

If your new car is totaled or damaged beyond repair, having this coverage in combination with your regular auto insurance will prevent you from having to pay that difference. When you combine this with a VSC, you will be completely covered for any possible eventuality.

Roadside Assistance

No matter how well you care for and maintain your car, problems are bound to come up from time to time. When an issue arises while you are on the road and your car is no longer drivable, it is important to be able to get the help you need. A roadside assistance plan will include things like towing services, battery jumps, fuel delivery, and locksmith services. With roadside assistance, you can have peace of mind if you ever break down on the highway or lock yourself out of your vehicle. Knowing you can get towed to safety and get your vehicle repaired is a great way to make driving less stressful.

Benefits of Different Types of Coverage

Understanding the different types of available coverage is one thing, but knowing how to benefit from them is another. Knowing how each of these coverage types can give you a major advantage in a breakdown or accident situation will help you decide which ones are right for you and which ones you should bundle with your VSC.

  • Auto Insurance – The biggest benefit of auto insurance products is the fact that they will keep you in compliance with the laws of your state. On top of that, more comprehensive auto insurance contracts will help you pay for repairs in all kinds of situations, whether they are for your vehicle or the other party involved in the accident.
  • GAP Insurance – The most important reason to have GAP insurance is that you never know what could happen to a car when you have it out on the road. Having to pay for a vehicle that is no longer usable can be a major issue, and if you have this type of insurance coverage for that very situation, you can feel more comfortable driving your new car.
  • Roadside Assistance – A roadside assistance plan is incredibly beneficial for commuters and people who love road trips. Knowing that you can get help with your vehicle no matter where you are can take a big weight off your mind, especially if you have an older car with many miles that is susceptible to breakdowns and mechanical issues.

Benefits of Bundling

While you can get all these different types of coverage from different companies, that may not always be the best option. In some cases, you can bundle your coverage plans by getting them from the same provider and take advantage of different insurance discounts and specials. Having all of your coverage from a small number of providers is a great way to save money while still getting comprehensive protection for your car. One way you can do this is by getting roadside assistance from your VSC provider and getting GAP coverage from your car insurance company. Most of the time, roadside assistance will be included with some of the more premium VSC plans, which brings insurance costs down for your coverage.

When you limit the number of VSC and insurance providers you are working with by bundling contracts, you also get the convenience of having everything under the same roof. In today’s world, it can be difficult to keep track of the different services you are using, and this can lead to being overcharged and not taking advantage of everything these services have to offer. By bundling insurance and VSC coverage with a small number of providers, you can have easy access to the services you are paying for and get the help you need right away.

When driving, there will always be risks that you have to deal with, such as inattentive drivers and unexpected road hazards. When you bundle your different types of auto coverage, you have protection from a wider variety of these risks. Coverage for everything from mechanical issues that are no fault of your own to accidents to weather damage will help you feel protected no matter what. Many things can happen on the road, and a bundle of coverage can give you a great deal of comfort.

How to Bundle

The best way to find coverage that can be bundled together is to search for providers that have a wide variety of available plans. Most VSC providers have different levels of coverage that may or may not include the specific things you are looking for. Finding a provider for your VSC coverage that has many different options will help you get the complete care you need for your specific car and coverage requirements. In some cases, insurance and VSC providers will even offer deals on different packages if you bundle them all together. For example, you may be able to find an auto insurance bundle with both auto insurance and GAP coverage for new car buyers that can end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to find coverage that is right for you and your particular needs. If you live in an area that has a lot of inclement weather, you may want to find an insurance bundle that includes coverage for things like hail damage or weather-related incidents. If you have an older car that has a history of being temperamental on the road, finding a VSC that includes roadside assistance will be essential. If you know your particular needs, you should be able to find a bundle that suits you best and that you will get the most out of.

How to Fix Your Car Smelling Like Fish https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/fix-your-car-smelling-like-fish/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 10:29:16 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=25302 As outside temperatures start to rise, smells that might have been dormant in your vehicle all winter can become more noticeable. During the winter, rodents can take refuge in your car and die, leaving you with a rotting, fishy smell. This can also be caused by a clogged exhaust or other vehicle issues. Let’s look at what could cause your car to smell like fish, how to get rid of a fishy smell, and how to prevent the fishy smell from returning to your clean car.

Why Does My Car Smell Like Fish?

A fishy smell in a car is often caused by the presence of moisture and decaying organic matter, such as a dead animal or rodent. In more serious cases, this type of smell can indicate a leak in the vehicle’s exhaust system or an engine component that has been compromised or damaged. However, it can also be due to something as simple as old food being left inside the car, especially if there is a small gap where moisture can enter the interior.

The fish odor in a car usually starts with a faint scent that quickly becomes more pungent if not addressed. The source of this smell could be due to standing water, such as condensation accumulating within the car, or even leaked coolant or antifreeze drying up on certain components like spark plugs or intake manifold gaskets. Additionally, one of the main reasons your car smells like fish could be mold and mildew growing somewhere in the vehicle’s interior. These microorganisms require moisture and organic matter to survive and thrive, thus making them ideal candidates for growing inside damp vehicles.

To address this dead fish smell emanating from your car, try to locate any sources of moisture and eliminate them. This includes checking for any leaks around piping, joints, or hoses leading to the engine by; inspecting for signs of oxidation on metal parts, checking for corrosion on wiring harnesses, and other vehicle inspections.

How To Prevent Fish Smell

Preventing a fishy odor in your car requires attention to detail and regular maintenance. The most important step is to keep your car’s interior clean and free of debris. Vacuum the carpets, upholstery, and other surfaces regularly. Pay attention to hard-to-reach areas where food particles or pet hair can accumulate. Clean up spills as soon as they occur, and use odor-eliminating products on any surface that has been stained or smells.

In addition to a deep cleaning of your car’s interior, it’s essential to keep it well-maintained. Replace cabin air filters often so the air inside your vehicle stays clean and free of odors. Also, check the condition of your air conditioning components since a malfunctioning system can cause unpleasant and fishy smells.

It is also essential to get regular tune-ups for your car so that it runs efficiently and without issue. Issues such as a clogged exhaust system or fuel injector can cause odors from inside the vehicle as well as from outside sources like exhaust fumes.

Finally, ensure that all seals around windows, doors, and other components are securely in place so that no water or moisture can seep into the vehicle’s interior. It’s also a good idea to inspect for mold growth in any dark areas, such as under car seats or within door panels.

By following these simple steps, you can help prevent fishy smells in you.

What Is The Best Way To Remove Fish Smell From Car?

Removing a fishy smell from your car can be done in several ways, depending on what is causing the smell. The first step is to find out exactly what is causing the smell. From there, you can use one of the following tips to get your car smelling as good as new.

Clean The Interior With Mild Soap & Water

A car’s interior is often exposed to various odors, such as fishy smells, which can build up over time and become unpleasant. Fortunately, cleaning the interior with mild dish soap and water can help remove these odors without special tools. To do this:

  1. Start by vacuuming any visible dirt and debris from the carpet or cloth upholstery.
  2. Mix a few drops of liquid detergent with a gallon of warm water to make your DIY cleaning solution. Then, apply a soft cloth to the affected surfaces.
  3. Clean in a circular motion to allow the soap mixture to produce suds.
  4. Wipe away any excess soap and water mixture and allow it to dry thoroughly.
  5. Use a shop vac to vacuum the wet carpet for even better cleaning and faster drying.

Vacuum Carpets & Upholstery Thoroughly

Vacuuming the carpets and upholstery in your vehicle is an easy way to get your car smelling better. You will need a vacuum with a powerful motor and strong suction. If you have various attachments for the vacuum hose, this will help you get into the smaller places where crumbs and food debris fall into. It is also essential to use an upholstery brush or crevice tool if you have them to get into deeper carpets or in between seats.

Use Baking Soda To Absorb Odors

Baking soda is an effective and economical way to absorb odors in vehicles. It binds with molecules that cause bad smells, neutralizing them to create a fresher environment. The best way to use it is to sprinkle it over your vehicle’s carpet and let it sit for several hours before vacuuming it up. You can also set out small bowls of baking soda to help neutralize odors lingering in your vehicle. Baking soda can also be mixed with a small amount of warm water to create a paste-like substance that can be used to scrub away stains in carpet or upholstery. Try this in a discreet place before tackling a visible part of your interior to ensure the baking soda does not damage your vehicle’s interior.

Place Bowl Of White Vinegar In Car To Neutralize Odors

Using a dish of vinegar in your car is an effective way to absorb odors and keep your vehicle smelling fresh. The acidity of the vinegar neutralizes the odor molecules, effectively removing any foul smells that may present themselves in cars over time. Vinegar also works to prevent new odors from accumulating. It is antibacterial and helps kill off bacteria that can cause musty smells. To use this method, place a shallow dish of distilled white vinegar in an area where air circulates, such as near a vent or beneath the car’s front seat. Leave it for several hours or overnight, and will notice a reduction in any foul odors. This is a cheap and eco-friendly way to get your car smelling fresh without using harsh chemicals or sprays.

Use Essential Oils

Essential oils can be a great way to make your car smell fresh and inviting without purchasing air fresheners. These natural, plant-based products are renowned for their ability to provide a pleasant aroma in any space, and they’re safer than artificial fragrances or perfumes. When used correctly, essential oils will safely disinfect the air inside your car while also providing a long-lasting scent that isn’t overly intrusive. Adding a few drops of oil to the vents or spraying an oil-infused mist in the car periodically can help keep it smelling fresh for you and your passengers.

Replace Cabin Air Filter

Replacing the cabin air filter in a car is an important part of its regular maintenance. The cabin air filter prevents dust, pollen, and other debris from entering the vehicle. It keeps the car’s air clean and smelling fresh. Replacing the air filter at least once a year will help ensure the vehicle remains free of allergens, pollutants, and odors. The process is relatively simple; most cars feature easy access to the filter behind the glove box or dashboard. A new air filter can be purchased from an auto parts store or online retailer for about 20 dollars. This is a quick and easy way to keep your car maintained and your interior always smelling fresh.

Keeping Your Car Maintained With Endurance

When your vehicle starts to smell, whether it’s fishy or a burning rubber odor, this clearly indicates that you need to find out what is causing this issue. This can be an indication that there is a serious issue with your vehicle that needs to be corrected. Keeping your car clean and well-maintained can help prevent unpleasant smells and unexpected repairs.

With a vehicle protection plan such as Endurance, you can protect your vehicle and wallet from unexpected breakdowns. Common Car Problems: How to Diagnose Car Batteries https://www.endurancewarranty.com/learning-center/how-to/common-car-problems-how-to-diagnose-car-batteries/ Wed, 12 Apr 2023 10:56:24 +0000 https://www.endurancewarranty.com/?p=25187 Keeping your car running smoothly is essential for any modern-day driver. Understanding the common car problems that are likely to arise can help reduce unnecessary stress and expense as a car owner. One of the most important things every car owner should know how to do is diagnose a faulty car battery. Nobody wants their vehicle to die unexpectedly while they’re on their way to work or on a road trip!

Taking proactive steps when diagnosing potential issues with your car battery can save you a lot of headaches in the long run. Let’s review the signs that may indicate a problem with your vehicle’s battery and helpful tips for troubleshooting and avoiding a dead car battery.

What Does a Car Battery Do?

A car battery is essential to any car, providing the necessary power to get it running. When the engine is off, it is a rechargeable battery that supplies electrical energy to the vehicle’s electrical components and systems, such as lights, radio, windshield wipers, and other accessories. The battery also helps power the ignition system and starter motor when the car is being started. In modern vehicles, the engine can’t start without drawing energy from the battery.

A car battery acts as a storage unit for electricity produced by the alternator while your car is running. When it’s not running, it acts as a reserve source of electricity to keep your vehicle going in case of an emergency or short-term lack of power. Without a functioning battery, you won’t be able to start your car’s engine at all. This is why regularly checking and maintaining your car battery or for a bad alternator are important parts of auto maintenance.

A car battery’s average life expectancy depends on several factors, including its quality, how often it’s used, driving habits, and if regular maintenance has been done on it or not. If you take good care of your car battery by keeping it clean and adequately charged, then you can expect it to last anywhere from three to five years on average. Regularly check for signs of wear or damage, such as corrosion or bulging, because these can lead to premature failure or even total breakdown if left unchecked.

Signs of a Dead or Bad Battery

A dead battery can be a frustrating and inconvenient problem. Knowing the telltale signs of a dying or dead battery can help you understand when it’s time to replace it with a new battery. Here are five signs of a dead battery:

Dim Lights

Dim interior lights or headlights indicate your battery has lost its charge. If the lights become weaker over time or seem to flicker in and out, the battery may be nearing its end.

Slow Crank

When you try to start the engine, if it takes longer than usual for it to turn over, this could mean that the battery isn’t providing enough power for the car to start properly.

Dashboard Warning Light

Many vehicles have an icon on the dashboard that will light up when the voltage is low, so you know something is wrong with your battery even before you try to start your car.

Swollen Battery Case

If your car’s battery is getting older, you may notice its case expanding or becoming swollen due to heat buildup from charging and discharging cycles over time. This could cause leaks or even breakage of the case, leading to further issues in your vehicle’s electrical charging system.

Corrosion Around Battery Posts

Last but not least, corrosion around either of the two posts on top of your car’s battery indicates that it’s time for a battery replacement as this means there is an electrical current running through them which may eventually damage other parts as well as drain your battery’s energy faster than normal.

How To Diagnose a Car Battery Problem

Several steps need to be taken to properly diagnose a car battery problem. Firstly, you must check the voltage of the battery with a multimeter. This can be done by connecting the two probes of the meter to the positive and negative terminals of the battery. The reading should be around 12 volts for a healthy battery. If it is lower than this, it may signal that something is wrong and further investigation is needed.

The next step is to check for corrosion on the battery terminals or battery cable ends. Corrosion can prevent current from flowing through and cause your vehicle’s electrical systems to malfunction or stop working altogether. You can use wire brushes and soda water to clean corroded areas to remove any impurities and ensure a good connection between your battery and electrical system components.

Another critical step in diagnosing a car battery problem is checking its cranking power or cold cranking amps (CCA). This measures how much electric current your car’s starter motor needs in order to start properly on a cold morning. To test this, you will need an ammeter connected between the starter motor and the battery’s negative terminal. If it reads low, then this indicates there could be an issue with either your starter motor or your car battery itself.

Finally, another way to diagnose a car battery issue is by doing an internal resistance test which measures how effectively electricity flows through your car’s cells when under load. You can use an ohmmeter or digital multimeter for this specific battery test. Still, if you don’t have one readily available, then you should take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic who has access to these tools for more accurate results.

Do Extended Warranties Cover Dead Batteries?

If you have an extended warranty on your vehicle, you may be wondering whether or not it covers a dead battery. With most extended warranties, batteries are considered a “wear and tear” item and not covered under warranty. However, many batteries come with a warranty, so you can check with the store you purchased it from to see if it is still under warranty. With Endurance Elite Benefits, you can get excellent services not typically found in most extended warranties, including roadside assistance to help jump-start a dead battery.

Saving on Vehicle Maintenance With Endurance

With an auto protection plan, such as those offered by Endurance, car owners can get factory-like coverage for years after their manufacturer’s warranty has expired. Each vehicle protection plan from Endurance comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, 24/7 roadside assistance and towing, and many more benefits.

All Endurance customers will receive Elite Benefits for one year with a small activation fee as an added bonus. These benefits include key fob replacements if lost or stolen, flat tire repair if you experience a blowout on the road, up to $500 in collision discounts, and $1,000 in total loss protection.
